And the wait goes on     I hope you are not suggesting that Guy Motors built all 29 8LXB Chassis in one run down the production line because if you are then Guys managed to do something that they never could at Walton-le-Dale and Sandbach. :open_mouth: Cheers Bewick.

It sounds like he’s got some serious ammunition Bewick.I’m thinking of deserting my post and leaving you to it.Just like anyone with any sense at Guy would have done when they saw that the guvnor was serious about putting that motor in it.Although to be fair it looks like he saw sense before he’d turned out thirty of the things. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

Aye! your just a “fair weather” mate “CF” when the [zb] starts flying your long [zb] gone over the horizon eh" you spineless [zb] !! Cheers bewick.

Admittedly surely if they really built 29 of the zb things you would have bought every one of them. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

No, sorry “CF”, all my 8LXB’s were in ERF’s and Atkis/Sed/Atks and no way would I have bought a Big J with an 8LXB,plus the fact I was never offered one ------- and neither was anyone else ! Cheers Bewick.

Wrong Jamie !! I meant was there any ex Guy Motors lads on the thread who may have been involved in building one at Fallings Park ! I never even considered that some extremely resourceful individual would actually recreate one of the elusive beasts :open_mouth: So sorry Pal but the search for an authentic photo must continue !   Cheers Dennis.

Would this be the Leyland you meant Jamie, but this one had the 8LXB engine in it which was one we removed from a Big J :sunglasses: :unamused:  Cheers Dennis.

You’ve remembered that all wrong. It was probably more a case of the cancelled 30th one of your 100 fleet order when the drivers all went on strike because they’d had enough of driving Gardner powered junk on the basis that the Boxer had more power in it.Although having said that I’ve got the rights to the idea of putting an 8V71 Detroit in a Clydesdale if only the council had the money to let me get on with the job. :smiling_imp:

Yes Im sure you are correct in saying this, These old Gardners go on forever if they are looked after despite what this C/F ■■■■ thinks, These engines were good on fuel & earned their keep, Plus I ran some old Fodens with them in & they certainly made a few bob for me, Plus they were trouble free, The good old days, Regards Larry.

Heres a nice Gardner powered junk in the good old USA the land of the Detroit & Britain’s finest engine the Gardner.

Hiya “CF”, well just to show there is ,nor ever have been, no hard feelings I think I could have given you a “start” on this Leyland and then if you shaped up I may have let you loose on a Scania 81,but then again one of our Traffic managers might have dragged you round back of the trailer park and beat seven bells of ■■■■ out of you  :unamused:  A chance missed ! Cheers Bewick.

No thanks Bewick I’d have preferred to have the proper gearbox in the old Clydesdale ( LPF 322P if I remember it right all these years later I wonder if it survived ) and all my teeth being that I could bet that the law up there would have all been on the home side when I claimed self defence. :smiling_imp:

Monday,21st September,2015,Autumn Equinox - it is now Autumn…golden-brown leaves…Golden Brown,a great song-record by The Stranglers

TruckNetUK.Old Time Lorries.

Guy Big J4T Gardner 8LXB 240-250 Tractive Units.

The Conclusion - well,I can always live in hope!

As promised in my very recent posts, here is the information that provides conclusive proof that Guy Motors,of Fallings Park,Wolverhampton,
a division of the BRITISH LEYLAND Truck & Bus Division, did indeed genuinely build and produced Guy Big J4T 4x2 Gardner 8LXB 240-250 Eight-
Cylinder In Line Straight Eight Diesel-Engined Tractive Units from 1973 to 1975.
29 Guy Big J4T 4x2 Tractive Units were built with a Gardner 8LXB diesel engine installed in each one of these lorries.
Guy announced in the Commercial Motor in 1973 that the Gardner 8LXB 240-250 Diesel Engine was to be made available in Guy Big J tractive units.
And 29 Gardner 8LXB - engined Guy Big J tractive units were built, and all had the optional 9Ft 6in wheelbase and all were fitted with the
Fuller RTO 9509 Gearbox.

Unfortunately,no known photographs of any angle and view exist of any genuine Guy factory-produced Guy Big J4T Gardner 8LXB-engined tractive
units. There is a 1973?,or 1974?,Commercial Vehicle Motor Show photograph of a white Guy Big J4T 4x2 Tractive Unit which could have a Gardner
8LXB engine in it,and I think this particular Guy lorry went to Smiths of Madiston - the operator with the largest fleet of Gardner 8LXB-engined
Guy Big J tractive units.
Photographs are not that important if you have written evidence, and we’ve now got written evidence that proves that Guy Motors actually
built 29 Guy Big J4T Gardner 8LXB -engined tractive units!!! EUREKA!!!  Please QV below and look at the photocopied evidence from
the archives of THE BRITISH COMMERCIAL VEHICLE MUSEUM!

I just asked the right questions, and BCVM Archivist,Gordan Whittaker, did the fascinating research - well done Gordon and thank you very much!

The historic details below were taken from Guy Motors production records that are now in the safe keeping of the Archive Division of The British Commercial Vehicle Museum.

The British Commercial Vehicle Museum Invoice to me,VALKYRIE  :-

Gordon Whittaker’s note to me:-

Guy Big J4T GARDNER 8LXB 240-250 Eight-Cylinder In Line Straight Eight Diesel-Engined 4x2 Tractive Units Production Details,Chassis Numbers,Engine Numbers,Dates,Operators, etc, from the Guy Motors archives in The British Commercial Vehicle Museum,Leyland,Lancashire:-

The blue-painted Wall of Liverpool restored and preserved Guy Big J4T 4x2 Gardner 8LXB 240-250 Diesel-Engined 4x2 Tractive Unit,PWK 914M,
registered on Tuesday,25th June,1974 is not a genuine Guy factory-built Gardner 8LXB-engined Big J. It has an 11Ft 4in(?) wheelbase,a Spicer
gearbox and was originally engined with either a ■■■■■■■■■■ Rolls-Royce,or Gardner 6LXB 180,or AEC diesel engine. It was originally a tractive
unit, but it was converted in to a heavy recovery vehicle - HRV later on. It was re-engined with a magnificent Gardner 8LXB 240-250 Diesel Engine,
it’s present engine.

The question is do any genuine Guy Motors factory built Guy Big J4T Gardner 8LXB 240-250 Engined 4x2 Tractive Units still exist?
Twenty-nine - 29 were built, they were rare when they were new…so they’ve got a low chance of survival - BUT I bet most if not all of those
29 Gardner 8LXB engines have survived!!! Gardner diesel engines were, and still are,at a premium and they go on in to further service once
their original motor vehicle applications have been scrapped, either powering other motor vehicles,or boats.or generator sets,or whatever.
But fate may turn up one or two genuine Guy factory built Gardner 8LXB-engined Guy Big J4T tractive units yet

And now for another mystery…well it is to me!

With respect,Bewick, how the hell do you pronounce your name?..I’ve often wondered
Is it BE - WICK, or “Buick” as in the famous marque of American motorcar? Please solve this mystery.Thanks.

THIS CASE IS NOW CLOSED

I love mysteries,so somebody please open up another motor vehicle mystery, please

How did I know there where only 29 GUY BIG Js BEWICK       DENNIS

Great detective work VALKYRIE.As for Bewick I’ve already confused it with Berwick on the basis of pronouncing it Berwick without the ‘r’.

That’s proof for me, but David Edwards had confirmed to me that they had one which I posted on this thread a few years ago… I also posted an advert from Chaddesley Commercials advertising the vehicle which M A Evans bought off them. I posted pictures of the lorry parked at Knighton. Don’t want to upset or argue with anyone, but VALKYRIE has proved beyond doubt that I and several others told the truth. Many thanks VALKYRIE.
Cheers Dave.

What we have known for years, pity someone is unable to admit they are wrong. Thank you VALKYRIE.

VALKYRIE:

Bravo! Nice bit of research. Now we can all rest easy in our beds! Robert

And we can all go looking for one of “The Twenty-nine” to restore! If there’s really anyone who would rather drive a Gardner than a ■■■■■■■■ of course.
