GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

Every single one of em and as stated the Foden box and ZF 12 speed to compare in the same Fodens and the pre ATI DAF 2800 respectively.
How many of them have you driven ?.

To add 8LXB with either the Foden box or ZF 12 speed splitter.

Ironically I’d only ever driven 10 speed splitter Scanias not range change versions. We had a cross purpose discussion long ago in which others had only experienced/or were referring to vice versa, which I didn’t even know about.
Equally Ironically for SDUs ‘observations’ that discussion couldn’t have happened if I hadn’t have known the difference. It transpired that the Scania box could be specced in either configuration and I’d only known the 10 speed splitter.Again like most suiting my preference for pre selectable, clutch actuated, split shifts which would obviously alleviate the issue of needless inconvenient stick work.
I found not only the shift quality was better with the Foden box than cable shift 9 speed but also better ratios more suited to the characteristics of the Roller, not a lugger like Cummins but also not a revver either.
I wonder what the 8 LXB would have driven like with the ZF 12 speed splitter.I think I might just have liked it.

None, but unlike you I wouldn’t consider any of them as a badge of honour. The closest would be a Daf 3300, (it may have been a 2800) with the slap across range change, not impressed but it beats walking, I guess.
I was under the impression that Foden was a premium truck over there. Do parcel companies regularly use premium trucks on short runs, such as you did?

That thought didn’t escape me. I would have thought mundane, entry level work would have used mundane, entry level trucks, but maybe things are done differently there.

Foden might have been more expensive than some, and certainly had some real die hard fans, but was it really better than others?
I only drove one for a week plus a few odd days, but it never struck me as being particularly special. The regular driver liked it well enough though.

The old DAF 2800 could be a bit of a lottery! Some had the ZF 6-90 12-sp splitter you described, on the Continent they tended to have the 13-sp Fuller as standard (not a very good installation - I drove a LHD one briefly) and the RHD UK-spec ones had the less-usual slap-across version of the 9-sp Fuller. Personally I don’t like any of the slap-across 'boxes at all and prefer 4-over-4.

Well i’m sat having a beer overlooking the Med so i will let the rest of you deal with the village idiot :beer_mug::beer_mug::beer_mug::smiling_face_with_sunglasses::smiling_face_with_sunglasses::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Anywhere nice, a Spanish island, or mainland Spain at a random guess?
Maybe you could share a beer with Carryfast?

I did a lot of miles with a 3 axle Foden unit, 350 Cummins, 9 speed with cables, and I thought it was a great motor, never had a minutes trouble with the cables, comfortable to drive and well on top of it’s work. It was a pleasure to drive it.

Well, that’s nice to know. I’ve just emptied the dishwasher and I’m being informed (quite vociferously) by Mrs GOM that I haven’t done it properly.
I shall try to contact ‘you know who’ to ask him what the correct procedure is…because he knows EVERYTHING.

Well you guessed correct i’m in Peguera Majorca .It’s very nice .I think the pilot may need some advice on landing the plane.Even though it was probably the smoothest landing i’ve ever had he could do with lessons from Village who will probably be an expert on everything he’s never done

I thought you would have invited him.

I will have you know that CF designed Concorde and the engine variant management control mid thrust capability at a cruising level on the Airbus A380.

The thing is he could be sat next to us in a bar or coffee shop anywhere in the world and we would have no idea it was the well studied engineering genius.

Or drive for Stobart or whatever they call themselves these days.

If CF was on the flight he would have berated the Captain for a poor attempt at flaring on the landing.

Nah, he’d let you know pretty smartly. :grimacing:
