Rank Bajin:
Hi, new to the forum and just browsing through the topics, a lot of good info here. With regard to the Guy Big J 8LXB tractor, i enclose a scan from the program for the motor show at the Kelvin Hall in Glasgow which lists a Big J with 8LXB engine option on the Guy stand.0
Fabulous, well done Rank, although as we have no pictures for Dennis and Co to look at,it STILL wont satisfy the disbelievers, but you have “done good”!!!

Well done Rank, there are a few that doubt the fact that the Big J with the 8LXB existed. So it will be interesting to see what they have to say now.Good to have you on the forum.
Cheers Dave.
hiya,
Dave it was only a show motor option there was none produced for general use according to a friend who did spend time on the production line at Guy Motors in his role as a BRS technician.
thanks harry long retired.
What year do you think that would have been “H”? I’d guess '73 and if you could have ordered one(which ,like you, I have severe doubts) £6875 was a lowish price for a 8LXB motor at the time,so maybe Leyland were just taking the ■■■■!! Well everbody got “■■■■■■■ at the Glasgow show so the Guy would just be a bad dream when everyone sobered up a day or two after!!Cheers Dennis.
I’m surprised that whoever it was, who’s idea it was,to stick that price label on it,did’nt also write on that description never in the field of British truck design has so much weight been stuck on the front to provide so little power.
Maybe that’s why they were flogging the 40 that they were (or might have been) mad enough to build around 2 and a half grand cheaper than the six cylinder one. Whatever it was that they were drinking was probably 60% abv cask strength scotch.

Read it properly Carryfast, the 6 cylinder was a tipper or flatback,a bigger, more complex item that the unit…FGS!

I should have known better than to take too much notice of Bewick’s ideas on buying trucks.
That’s probably why Leyland went under because their sales lot probably would have knocked 2 grand off the price of the tipper chassis to make it the same price as the tractor unit to make up for the extra cost of the boat anchor.
“carryfast” you spew forth the biggest load of garbage on the site bar none!! Anyway what are you doing poking into threads where your stupid, nonsensical statements, are not welcome! I’ll tell you something son,if you had ever accompanied me to a Kelvin Hall show you would have been “■■■■■■■■■■ in the first couple of hours with the strength of the drinks that were served in the hospitality suites and surrounding hotels.then we could have got you slung into a skip at the back of the hall and got down to some serious dealing and drinking. Foxtrot Oscar,Bewick.

There’s a unit from Hereford that’s been detailed to find Carryfast and string him up by the goolies Dennis, for being a traitor to all things British.
Cheers Dave.

And they’ll be using a tank transporter pulled by a yank unit with an old two stroke Detroit motor in it.

They wouldn’t let rubbish like that near their base Carryfast, they would blow it up before it got near Hereford. Why do you think Vincent Greenhouse closed down. They sold hundreds of Bedfords until they brought out those blue series engines and then the TM.Total rubbish at the end.

Only if they’d have sent some decent strength southern beer up there to match that cask strength scotch. But even after that I’d have been sober enough to make sure that I’d got a decent discount off that Big J with that zb great boat anchor in it assuming that they’d sold out of all the faster options.

Do me a favour “carryfst” us lads up here don’t class that “flat as ■■■■” stuff you drink as Beer, our back teeth would be floating before we got ■■■■■■■■■ I know I’ve had my share over the years, and there used to be a saying (applicable to all the “maidens water” brewed in the south) Courage!! aye you need (zb) courage to sup it!!! A few pints of the Beer brewed in the North would have you on your back “carryfast” no danger, our beer is for men and is far too strong for a “pencil necker” like you my son! Bewick.

Blimey Bewick you obviously never grew up drinking Fullers ESB or Youngs Special. One pint of those is worth almost two of the Northern stuff. That’s why I’ve been banned from drinking now at only 52 because they say that’s the same amount of alcohol as a Northerner would have drunk from the age of 14 until the age of 100.
what you guys that think a 240 guy did not exist should try and find an old bus driver that worked with kilmarnock based western scottish that run to london …nothing could keep up with them till smith of maddiston got the big j with the 240’s and it passed them

I think the evidence has definitely proved the case that these motors did exist David.
Cheers Dave.

More like ‘if’ they did exist it was only owing to the consumption of large amounts of alcohol that clouded the judgement of all concerned at the ordering and speccing stage.
