…your final sentence will definitely put you at odds with those in the “Guy’s built plenty of chassis with 8LXB engines even if no documentry proof exists” school of thought!! So if I were you I’d get in this trench with “H”,Trev H and me and pick up your rifle!!! Cheers Dennis.
Me…I have a wide open mind on this one Dennis!.
Even after all these years round trucks, I’m not ashamed to say I still learn something most days!.
If Guy did build ‘plenty’ of units with the 240, I didn’t see one on my travels round the UK to haulage depots, and one didn’t make it into our yard, and an awful lot of Big J’s from a lot of fleets did in those days.
I will be genuinely interested to find out!.
hiya,
And as the Mad Hatter from the story of Alice in Wonderland said it gets curiouser and curiouser, maybe i’m a bit related to the said gentleman my old lady says she’s convinced i’m crackers.
thanks harry long retired.

I think there’s plenty of belivers in the 240 Big J, even without the pictures.

I fully agree with these last sentiments, but what a pity there appears to be no photographic evidence to confirm the fact!!Dennis.
hiya,
Funny old world, lorry makers who are long gone and was so, long before the demise of Guy have records showing what they made what options they offered ie Maudslay was one why no such records for a much bigger enterprise like Guy don’t forget records was computerised in those days it was’nt BC, somebody will likely be sitting on a huge pile of documentation and laughing his socks off.
thanks harry long retired.

hiya,
Could well be correct Dennis, met “Trev H” a few weeks ago when he delivered up this way looks like there’s a filing cabinet in the passenger side of his motor could that hold the key to the 8LXB question I could see “property of Guy Motors” written on it maybe he’s holding out until there’s money on the table, he’s a big lad so I was’nt going to ask questions.
thanks harry long retired.
Sounds like he’s guarding the “evidence” closely “H”,he probably bought up the Guy archive when they shut down the factory and thats why he always sounds confident!!! Cheers Dennis.

Who went into the skip and salvaged it then?
You come from seagull country Dennis .
You sit at the tip gates and inspect each skip as it pulls in!!! Dennis.

And you never know your luck! the next skip in might contain a Big J with 8LXB still in situ! No! disregard that sentiment,if I have the choice I think I would have more chance of winning to-nights Rollover, the odds are much better!! Dennis.

Has anyone ever built one, sold one when new, repaired one,DRIVEN one,or at least seen one or possibly got a photo (side view) showing the 8 potter sticking out the rear of the cab .
Hi Dennis
I have been following " The Great Debate" with interest, but the proof of actual existence so far is on the same scale of success as finding Bownessie living in Windermere !!! Perhaps someone, somewhere, can provide the elusive paperwork to show a Guy Big J 8LXB. If this is ever found, will you perform a " SING AND DANCE " around the " Bring Me Sunshine " Monument in Morecambe ■■? Also, sir, does the finder recieve a reward ?
Just think about the publicity that would be to Morecambes tourism, maybe someone you know might be able to provide open-top bus viewing seats for all the contributors to this thread !! I think Id better sign off now, I think I can see a red mist hovering over the edge of Morecambe Bay…
Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Its water off a ducks back as far as I’m concerned CWM,but by comparing the Big J 8LXB to the monster in Windermere, all you will succeed in doing is setting off another “torrent of abuse” from the “believers”!!!And IIRC Tony Hudsons Guy Otter had 2 Gardner 4LK engines linked together so this would,of course, qualify as an 8cylinder Gardner surely! Tony reckoned he could go right over the Black Horse, with 3 decks of sheep,in top gear!!! Cheers Dennis.
