Hullo,
Dishford on the way south from Scotch Corner, had a Gate right in front of you as you approached the Roundabout. It was the Gatehouse to RAF Dishforth. It was removed though in the mid '70’s ( The Roundabout. ) If I recall correctly you sort of went off three parts round the Roundabout. There was a road off immediately left, to Catterick, then the Gatehouse, then there was the A1.
Cheers, Archie.

I think it was the mid-eighties when Dishforth roundabout was done away with. I went on containers in 84 and remember leaving Felixstowe at the crack of dawn so we could get through the roadworks at Dishforthand and miss the tailbacks which were horrendous, then up to the Quernhow for breakfast. There was also another roundabout north of Dishforth with a BP filling station on the northbound side right on the roundabout.
I remember going through Felton on the old A1, you coudn’t get a run at the bank because of the sharp left hand bend at the bottom. Also Pendleton & Hare’s yard was in Felton and didn’t they have a transport cafe at the front of it?
When the A1 ran through Catterick there was a transport cafe called the Tudor Rose. I think the building is still there but Idon’t know what it is now.

Hullo “night shift bri”,
Yes happen you could be right, I have probably got my dates all mixed up, I know it was a lot of years ago now  I do remember the Cafe out the front of Pendleton & Hares’ yard though. A good place that was to stop as well. That’s a company that has’nt been mentioned on here, ( got any photos of them, Mark  ) Do you remember that big hill down through Belford ? A friend of mine was killed coming down there, he was on for S.A.Bell of Malton, and had been up Scotch delivering Wards Steel and was coming home empty. Another couple of Cafes that I liked was that little Green shed just South of Berwick, on the right going up but you could easy miss it coming South as it was set back a bit, but really good home cooked grub. Then I always used that Cafe on the seafront at Musselborough, there were Public Toilets on the roadside just where you had to park, and you could always get a good wash before you had your meal.
Cheers, Archie.

That green shed would be the one at Scremerston I think Archie.Do you remember the Clock cafe just south of Scotch Corner on the n/bound side of the A1?

Hullo Chris,
Aye that would be it Scremerston, thats the spot. Don’t tell me you used to have dodgy nights out there too   I don’t think I do remember the Clock Cafe, although someting says I should, I don’t know why though. Did you ever use the Cafe at Londonderry Lodge ? :imp:
Cheers, Archie.

No Archie,Scremerston was a bit too far from Sheffield  .I never used the one at Londonderry, was it a bit dodgy? There was one called the Little Bistro on the s/bound A1 and some of our trunkers went in there.I used it once and that was enough, mucky ole it was, don’t know what it was like in the daytime though.

Hullo Chris,
I did’nt go much on Londonderry either. But that Little Bistro was I thought pretty good, a good long run in off the A1, really large parking area and I used to think the food was pretty good too. The bloke that had it always seemed to have a staff of half witted young girls, where he got them from I have’nt a clue. In fact when I used to take any one of my lads with me they used to call it The Silly Girls Cafe, in fact they still do when it comes up in conversation. It was pretty handy for me as I could shoot off just below that at Rainton (another cafe :bulb: ) to cut through to Thirsk, up Sutton Bank and Home.
Cheers, Archie

Yes i remember Brownie side cafe, also all 4 in catterick,I used the cafe at Felton also delivered derv to Pendleton and Hare. Scremerston cafe was owned by Ruby in the 60s-70s,she worked nights, Betty Brown ran it on days,I done a change over in Berwick in the late 60s,Betty"s daughter also Betty now runs Beal s/station. I remember also going round the back of Alnwick to avoid the arch way in the town centre.vic.

Here’s some pics I took a year or so back through all the roadworks on the A1 south of Leeming.

Sorry they were BP services.

. Feel to use any of these pics if they’re any use to you.

hi v7victor, i them towers in Alnwick where a pain, there was 2 route’s you could use the main one was the one you used turn left at the tower, and follow it through the town, you will remember narrowgate, then the peth, must have been about 6-7 lorries a year when back down the peth, think the lions where more in the river than on the bridge, unless we where delivering or loading in alnwick would use the denwick route, a bit longer but better than getting stuck in narrowgate, like most cafe brownieside was taken over by little chef, but close as lorry drivers about 75% of they business wouldn’t use it, bumper

Some good stuff there guys, you ARE being quoted.

But what about our southern colleagues, lets have the same kind of thing about the other end of this mighty highway.

Nor Winnie at the Haven,

ni v7victor, belford bank was the same as the peth at alnwick and felton, steepest part was about 3/4 up, got stuck behind 1 of s-c-cooks old scammell one day his second man was sitting on the nearside front wing. soon has they hit the steepest bit he pressed the cold start in you couldn’t see or breath for black smoke, seemly this was a regular thing for them , least we could skip gears on the banks but the scammell had to go down through the box, they left leg and arm must have been a blur   tested you skill of gear change and driving in them days, :unamused: :unamused: bumper

Thats right,I was Running up berwick with Road services forth darlington depot, with old Albion’s,and ended up with some of Cook’s old stuff after Tayforth took them over. them scammells were hard work with the gate box,Vic.

I remember my old man and his mates used to use the Ponderosa in the Sixties, I wasn’t sure of its exact site, think it was Rainton but some older guys will know, there was Lawsons also, his night trunk mate Jimmy Simmons was getting some light hearted cheek from the girls behind the counter one night so he said “Hey, a’ll smack ya backside if yi keep that up”, one of the girls replied “You wouldn’t dare” but she wasn’t quick enough to get away and he caught her put her across his knee, whipped up her skirt and walloped her, she went howling off into the kitchen. You would get Twenty years for that these days, infact you probably would of then but it was all just laughed off, they made sure they kept behind the counter after that though.

Cheers Franky.

The cafe on the southbound side at Rainton was called The Windmill, and as for slapping the girls, that could be dangerous, most of them were recruited from borstols or appoved schools, The Lawson family also owned this one.
