Got my Class 1 next week

And I’m already bricking it. When I see them out of the motorway I think, “yeah I could do that all day long”. On Thursday however I was doing a drop in a small business park in Bradford, said to the guy unloading me “Its a bit tight round here, those idiots in the vans don’t make it easier”. His reply was “Yea, the artics we get here don’t like it either”. I’m thinking how the zb do you get an artic in here when it was tight getting my 26 tonner around the place?!

Is this just nerves getting the best of me?

I hope it went well Radar.

After 20 years of class 1 work I still shudder at the thought of a nightmare delivery, but never had one yet that’s actually been a nightmare, just tricky, awkward etc.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help and take your time. Good luck.

Had my first day yesterday. Got out on the road about the same time schools were kicking out which was interesting. Had one point where I decided to invade the lane next to me as there was a bunch of kids crowding up next to some traffics lights with two running across the road in front of me. My instructor Chris said I didn’t need to take as much as I did but he could see why I did what I did. I’m getting used to the trailer but I need to stop just looking in one mirror when making turns. Like if I’m turning right I will only really look at my right mirror, with only a quick glance at the can opener on the other side.

Had a go at coupling and uncoupling which went quite well. Need to work on putting the main air line in as I keep screwing that up. Had one incident where I overstepped the mark a little though. As we were making our way back to the yard there is a merge point in the road, this is where I came unstuck as I was in two minds as to what to do. I was umm’ing and err’ing if I should move over and actually block the cars trying to squeeze past me as I would of done if I was on my own and in my rigid. At this point I had seen a gold Merc in my mirrors trying to jump me so I gunned it hoping to shut the door before he got close but that didn’t stop him from going over some checkered lines to get past me. At this point my “rigid” brain kicked in and I reached and lent on the horn expressing my anger at his stupidity. Turns out that wasn’t a good idea, well not for a learner anyway.

So for Monday, more reversing, coupling and uncoupling and less hot head!

Anyway there’s a driver there who has been with the company I was driving at 25 years fannying around trying to get into a space with two drivers helping to guide him. For reasons I cannot fathom he is trying to blindside it in.

Whilst he’s still backing into that I go into the yard, spin round and in 30 seconds from setting off to stopping, back straight into the bay he’s been trying to get into for the last 5 minutes in one go.

Back on form I see champ. Decided not to give modesty a go this time then?
