Welcome to civil world mate hope its good to you!
Best advice I would give you is remember there is no such thing as a daft question but there is plenty of daft actions! Never be scared to say you don’t know something MOST people will help you anytime
All the best mick

most being the operative word…some will want to see you on your arse,so they can gloat…you will do well to find out who these ■■■■`s are …asap :bulb:

Yes most including me but some of our “forces” collegues tend to believe the crap they here on the adverts.“join the army be the BEST” and they believe it.

Dont need no ■■■■■■■■ who thinks he knows all and knows nothin talkin crap because he once wore a bloody uniform.Been in this job too long and heard all this crap before.
Good luck.

So, judging by your rather acidic tone in your posts, you have never been a fan of the forces or you never made it through basic training and have been bitter ever since ?

I am proud of what I have done in my time and pleased to have been a member of the BEST Army in the world and now know that I am in a different ball game and i have a lot to learn. However, if I don’t know stuff, I will ask and if that means getting berated by others and it keeps them happy…fill your boots !

He does have a point. But he could have put it a bit better.
I also did my stint for Queen and Country, And there are quite a few that come out and know nowt. They have to be told what to do and when to do it.
But in saying that, There are some that can think for themselves and become excellent drivers.
It dosn’t seem to matter what part of the Army they have come from. Cannon fodder or Engineer. You end up with both sides of the coin. Some just can’t adapt to civilian life.
Good luck, i hope it goes well.

Oh your on for benton brothers. Went for a interview there about 2 years ago and they was paying 6.50 an hour all the way through your shift. But i suppose its a job in these tough times. Good luck

I don’t get this issue. If they joined up and worked as drivers in the Army IE RCT/Logistic Corps etc driving tank transporters etc etc then surely they’re going to have been trained better and know more than most civvy drivers. :bulb: But.If they weren’t intending to be drivers when they joined up and served doing whatever else then what’s changed now  . Why do they suddenly now want to be drivers when they leave the forces but they didn’t want to be then when they had the chance  .I think maybe that’s where the (justified) misunderstandings and conflicting views come from.

I know a couple of lads who have come out of the army. Nice lads and all that but they have on occasions come across as they know better than anyone else just because they’ve been in the forces.

At 16 I wanted to be an infantry soldier so I signed up n took the queens shilling after ten years service I’d had enuff and left and decided truck driving was something I wanted to do call it a Career change
I didn’t join the rct as at 16 I didn’t want to drive lorrys in the army
What I would say is there’s good n bad ex squad dies but pound for pound ex squad dies are more punctual more reliable and a lot better turned out than your average civvi
So might say I’m only saying this cos I am an ex squad die but I would like to add I was only in the army for ten years n I’ve been driving lorrys in civvi street for 13 years so in theory I’m more a truck driver than an ex squad die
I always find most people that moan about ex squad dies have probably come across the one in a thousand ex squad die that only done 3 years blanket stacking in some logistic regiment who thinks he’s gods gift
Just remember there’s more brain dead civilians driving lorrys than ex squad dies

I think it’s the fact of the direction which you wanted your career to go in at the age of 16 and if the army could have placed you in the RCT assuming you’d have asked to be posted in it which matters in this case. Not the years which you spent as a driver since changing your mind. :bulb:

My own personal view is that there is a difference between drivers having to compete in the job market with the career changers v the similar minded career drivers who had the job as a driver on their wish list at school leaving age and then did whatever it takes to enter the industry as soon as possible and that applies in all cases regardless of wether those career changers were in the army or civvies.

No one will ever know everything there is to know about the job. But,just maybe,at least in some cases, those career changers,at least the ones who are ex army, are taking advantage of the respect which those with an actual background as army drivers by trade would/should be shown only to them and which should only apply in the case of those ex army career drivers as opposed to the 'career changers who just decide to jump on the bandwagon at a late stage.

In which case they then maybe find themselves subject to some resentment in the case of many career civvy drivers for example being lumbered with a zb choice of work,or the dole, because ex army (or civvy) career changers are causing over capacity in the job market for drivers. The scenario could even also be foreseen in the case of ex army drivers by trade having to compete in the civvy job market for drivers with ex army ( or civvy ) career changers. In which case it’s my bet that you’d find exactly the same type of (probably justified) resentment, even between ex army personnel, especially as the employers don’t seem to want to apply a similar type of judgement in regards to who or who doesn’t get the job. :bulb:

So what are you trying to say because someone wanted to drive lorrys since they where born they should be able to get priority in the job market over those that have chose lorry driving at other stages of there what a load of old tosh
There should be no resentment to someone gettin a job in my eyes
There is no overcapacity in the drivers market more a lack off people willing to work hard for there pay every day I see drivers being picky n moaning about what runs the trafic office give them to do n what unit they’ve got to do it in
I myself 100 percent enjoy driving and am glad that I’ve had the opportunity in the last 13 years to do it I don’t feel any resentment towards any other drivers as long as they can do the job involved what I feel resentment to is the people that come to work not wanting to work and spend the whole day trying there hardest to not work
The one thing the army taught me is give every thing a 110 %

just enjoy the job smudge, you will ■■■■ up just like everyone else has (and still do  ) take it on the chin and learn from mistakes. i found it a steep learning curve when i first started and im still learning now, got nothing to do with the fact i use to blow ■■■■ up

Well, that’s the end of my first week  and it’s been great, asked loads of questions and have listened to advice of the older drivers

Yep, that was me coming out of kilingholme docks on Monday…with the ADR box and the shiny Benton Bros Merc…not bad for my first motor  quite surprised someone saw me lol.

Like I said, it’s been a good week and hopefully next week I can get some pics and a newbie diary post up !

nice one smudge, glad your enjoying it mate
