I’ve driven over the Verrazano bridge - seriously impressive.Look across towards Manhattan and see the Statue of Liberty - looks about the size of a chess piece.
Driven over it and gone under it a few times to/from NY from/to Southampton. 
It took 70’s Brit engineering to beat it in the form of the Humber. 
Although I’d guess that the Queensboro design would have been more practical in this case.
