I have an idiot proof spreadsheet for bookkeeping (that im not sharing) that I knocked up which only requires the inputting of the date & nett invoice amount. It then works out everything else I need, inc the various amounts of taxes/VAT, my drawings + a % of rainy day money to set aside for the bleak season & holidays and gives me a total figure of monies to set aside into my business savings account.
I,m in the process of starting to do my bookkeeping on one of these new fangled computer things
anyone know of website where i could get a template for sales and purchases, the likes of sage want a bloody fortune and half the stuff on there i wouldnt need
Accountants are a fickle bunch, most prefer or are used to dealing with fred smith the builder, or Joe bloggs the shop keeper etc. So any £220-£300 price figures you may have heard are probably more relative to those trades. When it comes to the S/E drivers, many dont want to know you, as its out of their comfort zone. Of around 10 accountants I initially approached, only 1 of them vaguely understood what this driving malarky was about, and even then they wasnt comfortable giving me advice but was willing to charge me much more than his average client

Microsoft office & the MS website do many templates for word & Exel. its more or less a case a of trial & error find 1 or 2 that you like .
Though I find the exel templates easier to work with, as you have options with word & exel to “save as” This allows me to save a selected area of the spreadsheet as a Pdf document (which everyone uses) so I can email it. This allows me to email/send only that section thats relivent to the invoice etc, and not the whole spreadsheet so the customer for them to wade through.
Once youve got your template customised to your liking. Save it, then double click the tab & label the tab "template" then the next tab week 1 W/C 1st Jan, (or whatever date is the end of pay week) the next week 2 W/C 8th Jan, etc etc. That way you will keep the timeline continuous. Then copy/pastes the template onto each page/tab, amending the date to match. Have a similar template file for each agency/company you work for so that you keep them segrigated, likewise you can do similar with timesheets. working with Exel is simpler than you think, there are many tutorial videos on youtube, but its basically a mix of pocket calculator functions, word processing & a game of pocket battleships. As the grids in EXEL are laid out in rows of numbers & letters, so any square can be refered to ie: A1, C121 etc. so if you had a series of figures lined up in a row, you can get EXEL to automatically add up the total of A1+C121 into your (for example G42) totals box (or Net ££s box) using the “at sum” function which is the funny greek figure in the tools. or you could type the command by typing the + key 1st, then type the A1+C121 without a break. and when you hit the enter key.
Its easier to do than it is for me to explain
Maybe IF I make to the TNUK xmas do, I may bring my laptop & projector along and hold an impromtu session in a corner on the basics that are relevant to making it work for for the average driver. Though ideally do it before the beer kicks in …USB memory sticks if you happen to have 1, are also useful for sharing templates, with maybe small volentry donations to the TN Charideeeeeeee from those whom I help
