GIST

Kynszon:
I went for my Driving Assessment yesterday at GIST and 30 minutes in the instructor cancelled it due to not feeling too well…that was before he saw my driving!!!

It has been reappointed for next week but the whole thing sounds like torcher!

I had 4 sheets of paper of “what not to do’s” to sign

Also, i only just started this, 3 written tests, one on tacho and general driving hours etc that was 50 questions long!

The other was 25 question on Working Time Directive (god knows how they get to ask that many questions on the subject)

The last one was 50 questions on the Highway Code!

Then i was to follow with a 4 hour drive around the country being assessed on my driving.

All this to trunk trailers from A to B… :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

I could understand this is the hourly rate was £17 an hour but it’s nowhere near.

The thought of putting myself through all that lot for £11.43 an hour makes me feel like cancelling the rebooked assessment

I would. Plenty of places you can go where your induction is “there’s the keys, phone us when you’re tipped.”

No idea how some of you can work for these types of companies.

It’s just that GIST are literally 5 minutes from home whereas Stobarts it a good 25 miles away.

The only other near me is Great Bear and they want 3 years driving experience and I only have 1 in an artic

Fair enough, can’t blame you for wanting to avoid Eddie.

The worst Great Bear could say is no if you were to turn up well presented with a good attitude, no harm in trying them. Remember, they can’t kill you or get you pregnant, you’ve nothing to worry about.

I wish I could say firms that do these sorts of long-winded assessments set high standards, but it tends to be the very opposite, that they set amongst the lowest standards in the industry.

In every case I can think of, long-winded assessments were the corollary of significant inherent safety problems with their processes, equipment, or sites - often involving at least one fatality or life-changing maiming - and the assessments were a sign they were trying to avoid addressing the safety problems directly.

I’m assuming stobarts at Doncaster is Tesco ( not hawsworth ) , I did days out of Tesco donny& even with roughly a hour up there from own depot & Rsu to tip before 1 st run I very rarely got to 12 hrs never mind 14 .
The 12/15 hr Tesco work was tramping out of goole , often 2x d/d then tip a single and get back as far as you could .
I.e tip Worksop , load manton wood , back reload & tip beeston / Carlton notts

Agreed. All this does is to serve as an excuse to the insurance companies (“See? We trained/tested our staff extensively, it can’t possibly be our fault, it’s their fault, it has to be their fault, oh please let it be their fault!”)

Once you get through all that crap you might find them a pretty decent firm to work for, depending on the work suiting you. I was there a short while and found the people good to deal with. The general manager of the site, I think his name was Neil, was a particularly nice bloke who always made time to talk to everyone.
If you like doing the same run every day you’ll be happy here, if you want variety then look elsewhere.

Don’t know tbh, its running out of Rick Beswicks cold store at Holmewood. They were looking for Mon-Fri trampers and have seen another ad for 4 on 4 off. Been rung up by them twice recently, but still none the wiser over my redundancy yet and I’m not leaving until I know as I have a decent amount of redundancy pay due.

The basic hourly rate (nights) £9.97 supposed to be equivalent to £11.59 per hour as they give you £15 meal allowance each day which is tax free
