where do i begin!!
the driving posiition is awful, i cant get comfy so i end up with siatica (spelling) down my right leg from the horribly placed acclerator pedal and it is too stiff to be able to drive smoothly.
the hydraulic retarder is so slow in activating that i have usually givern the brakes a tap, and the lever is too far away to get at quickly, it doesnt fall to hand
the gear box i find to be really hit or miss and when going in to 3rd or 7th i always crack my hand on the corner of the dash by the ashtray.
having to shake my bedding out before being able to get in to bed at night because it is full of dead bugs, flys, wasps, bees, moths, butterflys and general airborne crap!!
i always crack my shin on the steps when climbing in and out of the cab.
no flat floor
no drawer under the bunk
no aircon as standard on the base model
no cruise control on base model, and NO the hand throttle doesnt count
about all i can think of at the moment, but there probably is a lot more!!!
salut
chris
daf’s are built to a budget and always have been, they don’t claim to build the best equiped wagons on the market but something which is reliable and reasonable to drive for the money. i spose you pays yer money.
there was always a market for basic, cheap to maintain wagons but it seems that due to driver demands and resale values them days are gone which has seen the end for erf and foden, even daf are trying to get in on the top end with the xf100.
i don’t know wether it’s a good thing or a bad thing? we’re rapidly reaching a point where your average fitter/mechanic will only be able to adjust the brakes etc, anything to do with the engine requires sophisticated diagnostic equipment thats only available to the manufactorers main dealers, not sure where that will leave the small operator who runs half a dozen four year old wagons in the future?

Same throughout the whole automotive industry, all modern cars are the same. All you can do is basic service work, oil & filters, brakes etc.
Although it doesnt have to be a Main dealer, independent garages are allowed to purchase all the tools etc that a Main dealer can it was an EU ruling bought out a couple of years ago. Theoretically you could have independant specialists set up.
There are also some cheaper aftermarket code readers that do commercials, i have one that does most ‘cars’, pretty much to dealer level.
Never believe everything you read on manufacturers websites . The truck turned up on Friday… fitted with an Eaton 12 speed box!
Heres a pic of the interior…
Thing is the interior pic is straight of the Daf website & it’s identical to the one in the Foden. It would be interesting to know which bits are straight out of the Daf parts bin & which aren’t.
Can’t knock Dafs. I got an XF Space Cab brand new six months ago, and I love it. Best bit is the bunk. I could get the wife in there too and not have to touch her. It doesn’t handle like my 7-year old Scania, but it’s a lot more comfortable.
Air con, cruise, cd, walnut. Nearly as much kit as my Omega…

I don’t think your new Foden has an Eaton 12 speed, its really just a 16 speed ZF that uses the Eaton twin split gearknob so it only has 12 gears.Believe it or not you just have to swap your gearknob for the standard Daf/Foden ZF 16 speed one (as seen in your picture) and you’ll be able to use the splitter in the low range as well giving you 16 gears
It does have a very annoying feature though, on the drivers side window is a sticker “To protect the clutch, never start off in any gear higher than 2L”. Ignore this & you get a warning sound together with a message on the VDU telling you that you have started off in too high a gear!!
2L gets you to roughly walking speed before you are looking for another gear, not good when trying to pull into gaps on roundabouts.
As it will pull easily in 3rd (5th when empty) I have to confess I have ignored it on occassion… guess I’m in for some “retraining” when they download the data at it’s service.
