I’m just baffled as to why, whenever two people of any gender or ■■■■■■ orientation wish to be friends, that they feel they need to get a licence from the Church or Government to do so.

Because the law differentiates the legal responsibilities of a ‘legal married couple’ rather than ‘just two friends’. Both for legal and tax purposes, then there is co-habiting.
Direct.Gov.UK Rights & Responsibilities
Civil partnership
Same-■■■ couples can have their relationships legally recognised as ‘civil partnerships’.
Civil partners must be treated the same as married couples on a wide range of legal matters, including:
tax, including Inheritance Tax
employment benefits
most state and occupational pension benefits
income-related benefits, tax credits and child support
their duty to provide reasonable maintenance for their civil partner and any children of the family
ability to apply for parental responsibility for their civil partner’s child
inheritance of tenancy agreements
protection from domestic violence
immigration and nationality purposes
Cohabitation - living together
There are over four million couples living together in England and Wales in cohabitation, and they are given legal protection in several areas. However, they and their families have significantly fewer rights and responsibilities than people who are married or who have formed a civil partnership.
Many people think that, after living with their partner for a few years, they become ‘common law husband and wife’ with the same rights as married couples. This is not the case. In fact, couples who live together have hardly any of the same rights as married couples or civil partners.
There is no such thing as ‘common law marriage’.
If you are living together as a couple, there are steps you can take to protect yourself and your partner. There are also ways to minimise the legal and financial problems which may arise if you decide to separate, or if one of you dies.
You can find out about the current rights of cohabiting couples from Advicenow — an independent website offering information on rights and legal issues. Their ‘Living Together’ campaign is intended to make both opposite and same-■■■ cohabitants more aware of their legal status. The campaign also provides advice on how to protect yourself and your family, should you wish to do so.

Now thats a fairly crap attempt at trolling but I shall answer it nonetheless. Say for instance the person you fell deeply in love with, and may have been in a relationship with for decades, unfortunately fell ill. How would you feel if you weren’t allowed to visit them in hospital or make any decisions about their care. While a distant family member that may not have seen them for years could. Or if they died and you had no rights whatsoever when it came to inheritance if they left no will. This is obviously about more than just friends, but then its clear you may struggle with that concept. Or like I say are just making a crap attempt at trolling which I think is actually the case. I’d have thought with the amount of time you’ve been on this forum you might have been a bit better at it.
Thats just two examples why civil partnerships and marriage are important.

I am not going to get into the rights and wrongs of gay marriage or over zealous church people.
However with the hospital thing. I have just come out of hospital again and named my next of kin as a friend who is also a neighbour. It is easier than expecting my family to travel 100 miles to bring me grapes or a shroud
I have no objection to any two people (or more if they all consent) becoming a “partnership”. I have no particular drum to bang for or against organised religion.
However:-
A mixed ■■■ couple may marry in a registry office or a Church. The Church has the right to apply conditions/rules on those wishing to be married in Church; it is, after all, their club. Whether or not you agree with their terms is up to you, but they are entitled to do as they wish. Because they are a religion they are not restrained by some discrimination rules (as I understand it). If you do not like their rules, do not become a member or avail yourself of their services For same ■■■ couples there are still non-religious options; they are not being denied access to a civil partnership, only to having it approved by the Church. After all; your local hotel is not obliged to let you have your reception there if they choose. Because they are not a recognised religion they can’t discriminate against your ■■■■■■■■■ but they do not have to accept your business if they don’t like your face

What the hell is going on … why does anyone who does what they do want to publicise it for the world to know I cannot understand, what do you give them as a wedding present … 12 months supply of KY jelly? suggestions please …
Why even bother opening a discussion about it if it doesn’t affect you directly, as far as I am concerned it has no bearing on my life so I couldn’t give a toss end of. I can’t pretend that the thought of any kind of ■■■■■■ contact with another man does not disgust me, but it doesn’t make me a bigot or homophobic, it is simply one of the aspects that makes me straight. If either of my two lads told me he was gay I would like to think that I could deal with it, even admittedly if I wasn’t completely happy with it, or is that an element of homophobia, maybe I don’t know. How would you deal with that situation raymundo would you use the KY joke on your own boy? or laugh if somebody else did? I reckon not.

There is evidence that during the 15th century the marriage had to be consummated in public, certainly Royal marriages were done this way with the Kings and Queens servants, hand maidens, equerry etc. remaining in the bed chamber. Probably the reason for the four poster beds. Someone suggested that the Royal bedsheet had to be displayed to prove the Queen was a virgin
The Catholic church suggest that a marriage cannot be consummated whilst using contraception.
The various editions of the comic book suggest dozens of ways that would prevent same ■■■ marriage, why the hell would anyone want to be married in the traditional sense? Just introduce a less formal sounding name than Civil Partnership and go off and enjoy your vol au vents with friends.
I’m not really overly bothered either way although I can’t see why the Church or Government should not be allowed to say “Marriage is a partnership between a man and a woman”, any more than the Lawn Tennis Association should be able to say “Mixed doubles is a form of tennis where each team consists of a man and a woman”. I don’t know if that is trolling, but it is my genuine opinion.
The Catholics make me laugh covering up child abuse yet threatening hell and damnation on same ■■■ couples.
Ive been married 10 years so why should a gay couple get let off?
Why do these religious nutters think they should stringently live their lives by books that were written 1000s of yrs ago, values traditions and everything else then, have no revelance to how things are in the present day, if you were going to bake a cake you wouldn’t follow a recipe book written and using methods that are thousands of years out of date, you would use modern methods that have evolved over the centuries, if this applied to religions a lot of trouble in the world could be avoided. (bloody hell this discussion is getting high brow my talents are wasted being a trucker
need to lighten up Where’s my copy of Razzle
)
The bit I struggle with is the tenets behind most, if not all, religions:
- God made man
- God is infallible
Then you get the religious bigots who tell us that gay people are an abomination, they’ll all burn in hell, etc. So which one of the two points above do they want to conveniently ignore, to suit their twisted view of the world? The Westboro Baptist Church have to rate high on the list of the most hateful God-botherers going, yet they think they’re doing God’s work. Still think the Foo Fighters’ response to them must rate amongst the best ever!
Gary
It’s sick and wrong simples
Now where’s my pot Noodle ?
I’m not religious in any way shape or form but the standard Anglian bible, the king James bible was written in 1600s to the requirements of king James, who had the power to execute the author if it didnt fit his view of the world.
It’s not the word of god it’s the word of king James.
If we all was supposed to like bum ■■■ with the same ■■■ then we wouldn’t be alive would we so it’s obvious to me it’s wrong. I mean you never heard of Adam and Eve looking for a same ■■■ partner
And marriage is just ridicules, what comes after marriage ? Kids ? Kid goes to school and people ask who’s your mummy ? My mummy’s name is Steve

I don’t think everyone’s supposed to like it, want it or do it but what right do we have to order those that do not to? If ■■■ is only for having babies how do you explain getting a bj from the Mrs or pulling one off when you’re stuck in traffic?
When catholic priests was covering up for other priests for abusing children what right do they have to then dictate what anyone else does?
The Anglican church PLC is no better getting anti capitalist protests moved from st Paul’s because the gift shop was losing money!
The sooner we stop listening to religious bigots the better we’ll all be.

And its obvious to me that if the human race is dependant on the likes of you to reproduce its fairly clear that our species is doomed.
Lol here we go the 1st time keebs has got people not liking his comments. But then again I knew they wouldn’t be liked but that’s my view and we are all entitled to our view. I am yes Homophobic my father is my uncles are and infact my whole family. It dosn’t make me a ZB in fact I have many friends at work and outside.
I am simply saying I and most I know believe it’s wrong, to us it’s sick and appalling not right at all. But I will say again we are all entitled to our views. The whole idea of marriage really is going too far.
And what about all the 100s and 1000s of years of homophobic believes where yes our ancestors used to be like me and want a end to it all ■■ What’s changed ? This country getting soft that’s what.
I’m not up for an argument because I will never ever change my views i am simply putting my point across that it’s wrong. End of story
