do you wonder how the real truckers got about before sat navs were invented ?

your being paid to be a professional driver, to get the goods from a to b if your to thick to get from a to b without a sat nav then its time you took up flower arranging

Well said Desypete. Bloody kids nowadays eh? I imagine that you spend your days helping your missus hand wash the clothes (none of that washing machine malarkey) or cooking over your open fire (new fangled microwaves and cookers are for puffs surely?), maybe you finish off the evening gathered around the wireless by candlelight, assuming a wireless isn’t too a avant garde for you?

Do you still drill holes in your head to “let the demons out”?

Desypete loves to rant about “the good old days” and how using new technology is the end of the world as we know it. The irony that hes posting all that ranting using a home computer via the internet, and probably wifi, seems to be lost on him

Funnily enough I was also taking steel to radstock . It’s a right git of a town to get to no easy way in

Not out of Normandy, Surrey by any chance?

Next time I have that run I expect I’ll head for the A37 and avoid all the narrow roads to the south and east.

No this steel comes from france. I’ve found the best way in is up the 36 to the 361 towards Shepton (as the 362 has a weight limit;) ) then I think it’s the second turning past the tor works avoids Shepton then turn left after willmots to the end turn right on to the 37 and immediately right again on the 367 . I’ve found that the best so far the 367 is a bit narrow but usable . theres prob a tipper driver out of tor works on here that can give a better route tho

As for the sat nav not updating the new speed limits and all that I think it’ll be a while before that happens probably will be with the next software updates

I’ve got a new Garmin truck sat-nav and it’s also messed me up in the same area - was going to Radstock in a 44-tonne steel truck last month and it tried to direct me towards Bath on the A36, then through a village that’s had a 7.5T weight limit for several years. I turned back on local advice, and when I took the signposted route round the Frome bypass and back through Frome, it kept beeping to tell me about the weight limit on that road (which has a specific exemption for Radstock-bound overheight vehicles). It also hasn’t updated to reflect the new speed limits despite having several months’ notice. Have so far managed not to throw it out of the window, though.

As for how you do a job without a sat-nav - I used to use maps, and built up quite a collection of Philips/OS county atlases, and resisted the rise of the sat-nav for years, but I usually couldn’t get the agency to find out where I’d be going (and therefore which map to bring) in advance, and once I passed my class 2 in November 2013 I decided I really needed a proper truck sat-nav. Some companies insist you bring one, also.

I’ve been up to radstock a few times as well.
Pain in the hoop no easy way in or out.
I came up from the south west.
The way out I went through bath and onto the m4.

i wonder if its a class 2 drivers thing ? or are they all dependant on there sat navs these days ? i will take it that its a class 2 drivers problem. but then it would explain it

I asked Garmin and they said it would be with the next map update which is several months away.

if its several months away i would suggest all those who need a sat nav to get them around should stop work for the next few months until the update is available, just to make sure you guys dont get lost as we wouldnt want you poor things to be stuck or lost on the roads would we

No ones dependant on a satnav you fool, just because you have not the brains to work one does not mean the rest of us can’t work out there limitations.

Best thing since slice bread, and getting better all the time, roll on the sat nav, maps are the back up now if you ever need one as a last resort, you have people saying I would never use sat nav yet in the same sentence they say they use google maps or whatever. tell me who’s the fool

i had a pnavi, it was the best. but i sold it cos i couldnt update it

Mio M410 Bought off Flea bay/Tesco outlet for £32, good bit of kit, but as always, your captain of the ship not the Sat Nav…bit patronising I know…

I have a pnavi but I can’t update it. Works well enough but not perfect. I now use the PDA we use at work which has CoPilot built-in. So if anyone wants my pnavi, instead of taking the ops offer, I’ll send you mine for the cost of the postage.

Any chance of GPS co-ordinates please  :grimacing:
So I can retrieve said hurled sat-nav for free :grimacing:

I look at sat-navs the same way I view power tools, they’re just a tool, like power tools there’s variations in quality which often correlate to price paid, and certain times when hand tools (maps) are more appropriate.

Like power tools, much of the time they save time and effort, the trick is knowing when to use them and when to use something else.

I treat my sat nav like a game, just like challenge anneka, I’ll beat that time to destination to the next clue… er drop.

it’s actually pretty handy just having a rough idea on how far/how long you’re away from where you’re supposed to be even if you’re just following road signs, so when you get the inevitable phone call “how far away are you” from office numptys, you can give tell them (plus 30mins for dicking around/making yourself look good and early)

I dont use a sat nav. I just look at the direction of the sun, stick a wet finger in the air and head off. Follow the direction of the crows and watch the shadows. That’s all that’s needed. All these new fangled gadgets. Pah

On its way - if I were Liverpudlian I’d be telling you to calm down! Just discovered the original charger went AWOL and I replaced it with a bullet-charger and a lead from some other bit of kit. Works fine though and in either a 12 or a 24V outlet in your truck, whereas the original was 12V only. Cleared memory so you’ll need to create your own profile with the dimensions of your truck. Good luck!
