Hi Helen
Government funds (our money) sholudn’t be used in this way (i.e funding DCPC from government funded qualifications) but most training providers are doing just that as a carrot.
In other words they are using the funds from the NVQ training to cover their first 7 hours DCPC module.
Don’t forget that the NVQ as such finishes at the end of July 2011; there are other courses available including apprenticeships which are mega bucks for the training providers so maybe you could squeeze all the DCPC modules for your drivers on the back of apprenticeships for your drivers!
Send me a PM and I’ll tell you the downside of apprenticeships and a good training provider in your area (can’t advertise here!) - don’t want to scare everyone off as they are the courses of the future and not as people think just for youngsters!

Hi roadhog69,
Since you’ve joined a discussion forum, then why not discuss apprenticeships openly so that others can see and take part?
As you’ve mentioned, apprenticeships have a downside, but it’s yet another example of the powers that be recycling a word that already means something else.
Let’s see what they might say about it…
Err…, umm…, an apprenticeship is a bit like an apprenticeship, but not quite. However, older people can now take part in them and gain the qualification. I think that about covers it.
I predict much wailing and gnashing of teeth with this, just like the DCPC.
BTW, it’s not against site rules to give a recommendation.
It is possible to advertise on here, but to do so, you should first contact Rikki-UK, the Forum Community Manager to discuss the matter.

Hi Helen,
I think it’s possible that the college lady might have said NVQ when she meant something else and so it may have been nothing more than a slip of the tongue.
The paperwork says NVQ. But then after it it says QCF. So maybe they are just referring to them as an NVQ because that means something to people, whereas QCF doesn’t (yet)?
I seem to remember that all of the Wincanton drivers did an NVQ in road transport, is it recognised anywhere else apart for that company?

Hi Malc,
Yes, lots of companies put their people through the NVQ in transport, and there was another NVQ for logistics and warehousing too. The NVQ is recognised throughout the UK, and the “N” stands for National.
There’s even a (pretty much compulsory) NVQ for taxi drivers, which has been running for several years now.
. … and quite a few of 'em still couldn’t drive a duck to water.

Unless the “good training provider” happens to be roadhog69 in which case it may be seen as advertising
I agree about openly discussing apprenticeships though
Welcome to Trucknet-UK roadhog69

Hi Helen,
I’d guess that you’ve made a fair guess.
