If the police are tthat short of money then surely the most common way to raise funds is as follows.
Send police out stopping all the drivers on there mobiles… maybe give it out to them.as an overtime shift just stop people on there mobiles.
Or put them on commission for every driver fined there soon boost there income and budget

I reckon there would be plenty of money for more police if they didn’t run around in BMW 2, 3, 5 series and X5s as well as the Merc E Classes and unmarked Audis
Ford, Volvos and Kias would be cheaper and just as effective as getting them from A to B
Would you buy an ex police Beemer? Nope - I wouldn’t buy an ex police Ford or Volvo either so seems irrelevant
How much life d’you reckon it’ll have? As much life as any other brand of vehicle - BMW and Merc aren’t magical that last longer… If you wanted that, they might want to consider Toyotas - Probably cheaper than BMW and Merc too
Or would it be a (well maintained maybe) high mileage, company car having had many drivers and sometimes idling, sometimes thrashed? No idea what you’re asking here
Would a Ka be cheaper really?? Yes, a Kia really would be cheaper. Especially when you take into account Merc and BMW offer 3 year warranties vs Kia offer up to 7 years on their cars sold to public, which do you reckon are put together better in the grand scheme of things?
What can a BMW X5 bring to the table that a Ford Kuga or a Hyundai Santa Fe or even a Toyota Landcruiser cannot at half the price?
Same question posed for Merc E Class / 5 Series vs Ford Mondeo/Volvo V70 or I40 thing
The budget is fine, how they spend the money needs fixing

For instance BP have an app that allows you to pay for your fuel without getting out of your car (Playstore BPme).
All very well but who puts the fuel in the car ■■
I reckon…
BP couldn’t give a monkeys who puts it in as long as the bill is paid. The app links a nominated credit/debit card and payment is authorised by the cardholder after the fuel is put into the car. BP gets the cash so I doubt it’ll be bothered.

The ability to carry massive amounts of kit and still respond in a decent manner, fill a Kuga or Santa Fe with all the kit an ARV carries and the thing would struggle to move, also Santa Fe rated to tow 2 tonne BMW 3.5tonne, makes a hell of a difference when you need to drag something out of the way.

I wonder if they’d be so uninterested if the stolen fuel was tax exempted, ie the fuel station loses the cost of the fuel itself (probably around half) and the treasury agrees to refund the fuel tax and VAT on the stolen amount, sounds fair to me.
That way, in the words of our great leader Cameron the Vanished , we’d all be in it together.
As i’ve said in other threads, the police are no longer charged with the Peel principles of preventing crime and protecting the public, you really are on your own out there.
Common purpose and diversity & PC are the reason crime is up they are scared to nick non white’s in case they get called waycist, that is when they aren’t prancing around in rainbow coloured cars and painting the fingernails & most importantly monitoring social media for so called hate crimes (hurty tweets)

The reason for using large heavy-ish estate cars is for t-pac’ing the weight of the car is important, as is the full up weight when either in response guise of arv spec.
One of our yards in London got done over the weekend. 8 rigids all had there tanks screwdrivered to get the fuel. Cheeky baatarda even used the anti siphon device as a funnel. Plod cant attend for a day or so but we cant afford to have the wagons off the road waiting for them. Hopefully CCTV caught them.
One way for the police forces to save money is , as others have said, the vehicles they use.
Why do the normal plod around town need brand new Astras?
Theres plenty of decent cars seized every day for no insurance, drink driving, no tax, etc etc
When a vehicle is seized the registered owner has 28 days to claim it back with the relevant documentation. After that its either auctioned off with proceeds being put into the pot or its taken down to the workshops and stickers applied and used by PCSOs , local bobbys, or left unmarked and used by detectives working undercover.

I think you’ll find the Santa Fe has a higher towing capacity (2.5t-2.7t) than an X5 (1.9t). I’ve yet to see an X5 in ARV role, less Central London in the news etc. I’ve seen Mercedes Vinto vans doing that role outside of London
Sure an X5 is quicker than a Kuga or Santa Fe (And thirstier, more expensive upkeep etc) but realistically, if you want a fast response/pursuit vehicle, you wouldn’t pick a big heavy X5 for that role anyway as it just wouldn’t keep up when it comes to the first curve or roundabout
For T-Pac manoveurs, a cheaper vehicle makes more sense, such as a V70 or Mondeo or any non Premium German brand SUV of you choice, that would have typically cheaper body panels etc - Afterall the V70s used to be used for that exact role

You must drive around with your eyes shut, virtually every police force in the UK run X5s as ARVs.

Fuel companies must decide if they are fuel retailers or corner shops.
Fuel companies don’t own the petrol stations, individual separate businesses do. They make next to nowt on fuel any more which is why many are also now mini-marts etc.

+1 there conor my good man.
the fuel is the loss leader to get you into the shop.
theres pennies of profit on a tankfull of fuel which i why petrol stations close down as quick as pubs.
theres more profit on a mars bar and a can of coke than £20 worth of fuel.
i owned a garage till 15 years ago then sold everything on.
at the same time, tesco announced t their shareholders that they were going to operate their petrol pumps at a 40 million pound a year loss leader to encourage customers to use the store whereby adding 1p onto a tin of beans would make up the deficit and also mean the other supermarkets wouldnt get the custom which means all the supermarkets work the same way to crucify the independant petrol retailers.
