Four-in-Line trailers

Bewick:
The 4-in-line flat trailer is a totally different animal to the “knock out” 4-in-line bogie low loader,OK the axle configuration may have been the same, albeit on different size tyres, but there the similarity ended!Cheers Bewick.

hiya,
Dennis never had any bother with with low loader “knock out bogie” type four in lines apart from the “very” hard graft when removing/replacing the rolling gear especially when on uneven ground which believe me was always the case when i got an abnormal lump to shift, but those old girls was stable enough, the new stuff must be a doddle with the hydraulics for this and the hydraulics for that. do drivers do any work these days, I might even make a comeback, then again I might not wouldn’t get tired enough to get to sleep.
thanks harry long retired.

I understand that those “knock out” axles were a right bloody pain “H” in their day!! Thats why you would see them trying to slew the tracked machines round on the bed without knocking the axle out.It looked like a right bloody struggle sometimes but some of those lads would do owt to avoid knocking the axle out!!! Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
Guilty as charged Dennis always carried a swan neck full of big timbers on the off chance the “trax man” would take the old RBs off the side I did plenty out of Trafford Park.

Can’t teach an “experienced old dog” new tricks can you “H”!!! Just imagine it “H” we could be,to-night, sat in the cocktail bar at Reids in Funchal, after a slap up dinner (as your guests!) we could be rubbing shoulders with the “hoi poloy” OK ya! and so forth!! Nice warm evening lovely jubbly!! Cheers Dennis.

My dealings with 4 in lines, I didnt care much for them the earley BTCs brakes were poor, but if they were loaded correctley the were quite stable, a lot of drivers had it in their head to put all the weight up the front for traction, rubbish the trailer had to be loaded correctley for saftey, not to mention the W&Ms. who in my book were proper w<>kas, book mem I called them They new every thing about nothing, & nothing about everthing,Regards Larry

hiya,
Dennis have done that in Reids sister ship namely Raffles at Singapore with some rather wealthy people from Bolton who we met on holiday they did insist that we was their guests and when i saw the price list I didn’t argue but i did offer to share the bill honest but they wouldn’t hear of it, ■■■■, twenty years on and we still swap Christmas cards well I’m not a total tight-wad.

We used to have 4 in line lowloaders at E Hull limited in Bedford in the early 70s .The trailer brakes worked by cable which were unhooked to remove the rear wheels after jacking up the bed . Trouble was the cables stretched in use leading to hardly any trailer brakes after a few miles with a heavy load. .

Pat they might have thought we would not notice    but there is to many old salts on this thread  I would say that between us we know every trick in the book as well and some that have not been thought of yet
cheers Johnnie

Marcus 22 if you were knocking back wheels out you may know more than us but things were done in the 60s and early 70s ( before elf &safety) that you would end up in the lock up for nowadays but things have changed so much and some of them for the better like moving crawler cranes with the jib on cross carriage and over 20 of over hang.
cheers Johnnie

Sorry but I saw a pic of a machine obviously tracked on sideways and some one takes offence and removes the pic!!!

Can I please ask why■■?

I know people got away with murder in those and fair play to them but why take offence at a fair comment please tell me why?

Regards Pat

hiya,
Yes Pat a blind man on a flying horse can see that particular machine was put on without any “knocking” out being needed and I like a few more of us on here who have “done a bit” spotted that, then again unlike me the particular driver may have liked to remove the “backend” just for fun, or he might have been on bonus,
