Form an orderly queue....£8.50 per hour.!

Winseer:
Don’t forget everyone - that the real hourly rate you work for is the actual hours you spend away from your home divided into the NET takehome pay.

Eg. Leave home @ 6.15am, clock on @ 07:00, take an hour off 13:00-14:00 for lunch, book off @ 17:00 home in the evening traffic @ 18:15.

SO monday-friday you’re really putting in 60 hours per week - 60 hours where you are not at home with your wife, kids, private life etc. available to do stuff you want.

Now if your job gives you a takehome pay of £600pw - then that job I’ve just described effectively pays £10ph - got it?

If you can’t push up the headline hourly rate in your workplace - then concentrate on doing the job more efficiently instead, and “Make time” to effectively increase it. :bulb:

The same job I described above, but this time with the figures massaged as follows - looks like this:-

Leave home for work @ 06:45 Clock on 07:00, Take same breaks as before, but this time you’ve got away 45 minutes earlier, and not only missed evening traffic - but you are setting off home @ 16:15, and are home by 16:30.

That’s a total of 10 hours round turn per day instead of 12.

You’ve just reduced your Door-to-Door working week from 60 to 50 hours, and pushed your effective hourly rate up 20% to £12.00ph - without even getting a pay rise!

All you’ve done is make 45 minutes on your duty. I do NOT recommend doing this by “taking your break on the derv pumps” btw. Just become efficient at doing your regular job, so you can do it standing on your head so to speak. :sunglasses: :grimacing:

Anything that cuts down your commute time - helps a LOT as well of course!

You’re not “massaging” the figures. You’re taking a liberty with them to achieve a happy ending!
By leaving work 45mins early many would earn 45mins less pay. (Some are salaried, some aren’t)
And suggesting that leaving work earlier means a journey time of 15 mins instead of 1hr 15 minutes seems a bit extreme.
OK, I’ll agree there’s an argument to be made about work/life balance etc, but I ain’t convinced by what you’re saying here.
I’d argue that the hourly rate isn’t as important in the real world as what goes on your tax returns at the year’s end. That is what pays the mortgage, holidays and pensions. We’d all like to achieve comfort for minimum hours but sometimes time is sacrificed today for a better future.

A chap Ive known a while has just been for interview with Port of Tyne. They offered a. Container work mon to fri, early starts, £8:80ph. Or b. General haulage, any 5 shifts in 7, so weekend work, start time between 4am & 4pm, you find out the day before what time you’re needed, most of the time, sometimes it’s onthe day. Occasionally you will be expected to have a night out. All for £9:70. No increase on rates. They do use brand new shiney volvos though.
That said I’ve seen a few ads lately offering general haulage work for £8:50 up here.

Just looked back at Mr Mouse’s posts over the last few years. He does like a moan and a whinge doesn’t he? :unamused:

I’m Just trying to improve pay and conditions in this dreadful industry but as long as there’s people like you that think £8.50 per hour is ok then nothing will ever change…

Nah…8.50£ is not ok, not even anywhere near what a class 1 driver is worth.
The problem is, theres many who will gladly work for that kind of pay and employers know it.
No, it will never happen but there should be a minimum HGV rate…12£p/h would be a reasonable starting point. In the UK though with tax credits given to those that have children its not always feasable to chase a decent wage as the govt tops up any shortfall anyway…

Like the CAO in the Netherlands? :sunglasses:

Funny, I’ve been researching Dutch work lately, and am about to start contacting firms in Holland about work.

It’s good to have a foot on both sides of the Chunnel… :grimacing: :grimacing:

Had an interview just before xmas for a bulk tipping tramping position.
£7.68 per hour for 40 hours then time & half.
Surprisingly I declined the offer, no amount of “dressing up” that shocking rate will detract from the fact that the rate was terrible!
Just over £300 BEFORE TAX for 40 hours, yes we all know that you’ll max your hours whilst tramping BUT £7.68■■
The race to the bottom continues…

Who in their right mind wants to work 60 hours a week?
