I believe that Tilcon possibly had more? Tarmac did have quite a varied fleet but Tillings were almost 100% Foden from 1971 until the vehicles were all sold off in the early 90’s. Both companies must have been among the major purchasers though.

My last firm had one of those Foden six wheelers new as a tipper, the engine was fine for its size but the synchromesh gearbox wasn’t! I think that he had four replacement boxes until he finally replaced it with a ‘big’ Fuller constant mesh one, casings breaking was the problem. It also had a replacement engine fitted later but that was due to the other being worn out.

I also had one on the same firm that came from a breakers with a knackered C series and gearbox but we had a L10 and Fuller overdrive box in stock so that was fitted instead, here is a pic of mine courtesy of facebook after I was made redundant and it had been sold back to the High Peak area, not my pic though so credit to the picture taker;

Wouldn’t argue with you on that Pete, For every Foden Tarmac had expect they’d be triple Leyland motors, they must have kept Albions men on night shift.

Had a year driving 6whlrs, Leyland, they didn’t necessarily want to take corners when asked to. 8whlrs like you know what to a blanket. In my 10yrs driving tried to steer clear of artics / 6whrs liked plenty of rubber under the cab

Yes I agree with you there Paul, you could come unstuck on corners in the wet or on greasy sites! No such problem with an eight, you could launch them into almost any corner on the door handles! :laughing:

Front n rrs end of one I drove for Cliffe Hill, L reg one of four, on his way into sidings. If asphalt plant were busy they’d give you a quick un down to rail sidings, 2ml round trip, didn’t earn you a lot but more than scratching your doo dahs in a queue. First 3months on for them I was on H reg 24t Scammel doing sidings, 24 loads a day money earned, I must have been nuts :unamused:

This little beauty turned up at the Foden Society AGM a couple of weeks ago, good to see another dumper restored.

A credit to them that sorted her. Out of curiosity, would she have been road legal in her day?

Was that little dumper restored by Malcolm Sample? I recall him collecting a very similar orange coloured one from us about twenty years or so ago. Straight from work on to his low loader. Great job wherever it came from.

Not sure who did the restoration, but it wasn’t Malcolm, but he was there with his ex-Royal Bank of Scotland 3300 tractor unit. And yes, they were able to be road-registered.
