Great shot there Robert of a Shap Granite motor which brings back memories of the late 60’s when I had started as an O/D and lived at my parents at 44 Shap Rd. in Kendal. The street that ran around the back of our house was Mint St. and one of the residents who lived there was Jack Ridley and he drove a Dodge 308 six Wheeler for Shap Granite, not just sure if it had the Leyland or the Perkins engine, however he used to park it on the Mintsfeet trading estate and walk round home past where I had first my Trader and then my D1000 parked at the rear of my parents house, he was a great old lad probably in the last year or two prior to retiring, his motor had the same drop side body and was painted a beige colour which the Foden in the shot would have been painted. Jacks loads which were always for the south of Kendal i.e. Lancashire and were either large spun concrete pipes, kerbs or concrete flags. He did one a load a day then reloaded for the following day. On the regular occasions I was parked on the “back street” as we called it he would stop on his home with his bait bag over his shoulder and have a chat, me being a 20/21 year old O/D and him at the twilight of his driving career. Great memories ! Cheers Bewick.

Not my pic, it was sent to me on Facebook by the driver (Alan Alcock) who drove it after I left, but it is the last new Foden I had at Ballidon. Pic taken in Birmingham I believe.

10/10 for effort there dan , it’s nice to see there are still men about that will keep trying until they succeed . Nice view from up there as well . dave

Cheers Dave ,it was one of those when do I say ’ can’t get ’ ? :unamused:

Just seen the other pun chard videos on youtube Dan . Those erf motors are the dog’s thingies , look good , sound great and i don’t think any of the modern stuff can hold a candle to them . I would still like a go in one ( if i could haul my aching bones up the steps ) Dave

Two more.
Oily

Tommy Babb’s two stroke mixer is in Heritage Commercials this month. Tom carted bags out of Ballidon quarry for many years (he used to get his spare parts from our scrap bin back in the 70’s, recyling existed even then  ) and ran many different Fodens but strokers are his favourite he says. A good job he has made of it.

Pete.
