Flashing warning signs on mways . . .

You need to be pretty stupid to breakdown or come to a standstill in the middle lane of the M6 sometimes I think people want to kill themselves!

They do work sometimes!

Yeah they do, the problem is though they don’t work all the time

People ignore them because they are usually wrong and that could cause big problems

the boy who cried wolf springs to mind. i had that the other night. speed limit decreased, queue ahead, nothing! the operators should be doing their jobs properly if they want these things to be effective instead of detrimental

even worse are the ones that say FOG or a clear day or when you are struggling to read the warning through the fog. obviously we are not qualified enough to recognise fog so they need to inform us that the reason we are straining to see the sign that says FOG is because its foggy :unamused:

Just as there is a delay between any incident and the speed limit sign lighting up on these managed motorways, you would hope that there would be a reasonable delay between the limit going up and its enforcement, to allow for traffic that’s gone through it just before it’s happened to get out of the system, so to speak.

As referred to in the various threads emanating from this:- forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?showtopic=74766

I quote “Unsubstantiated reports are starting to break that the CPS are dropping hatfuls of cases involving the variable limits on this stretch of motorway” (M42), it would appear that the authorities’ legal knickers might be in a bit of a twist on this issue. For instance, if the sign isn’t quite working. e.g. the red circle bit has broken and not showing, then I presume it is not a prescribed sign and has no legal meaning - some signs are regularly in this state IME. As ever, if you are in the right regarding the speed limit at the time you pass, your own video evidence and satellite tracking info should cover you by proving exactly where you were and what happened.

Ive gone through the signs speeding plenty of times, ive only seen one go off on the other side of the road, personally i think there set to 60 or 70 and never change.

I don’t suggest you do it on the M42 Birmingham. I have often seen the sky lit up with flashing speed cameras there.

the signs that sometimes say fog are also know as wickets to inform drivers of lanes clsoed etc … they have sensors on the sign and believe it or not they are sensitive that a spiders web will trigger it to think it is foggy …

that i could understand discoman but why put up FOG? there is no need to slow down before you reach it and there is no point in trying to divert around it. if you are already in it, you usually notice you are in it. i just dont see the point and find them to be more of a distraction than anything else. you see the flashing lights but its too foggy to see it until you are close enough to see through the fog and all it says is FOG. surely that is doing nothing other than taking your eyes away from where they should be which is scanning ahead for any problems in front of you?

I’ve seen the ones on the m42 flash loads of times. I just obey to be on the age side.

They are an absolute joke though. The speed limits always seem to be active on the 42 even when not needed.

Did anyone get caught out by the info on the matrix on the M4 w/b j11-13 last night saying that j13 exit to A34 was closed? No, neither did I…as there wasn’t any!! Left Reading (j11) at 2200 and as normal, had one of the lads with me who I drop off at Robin Hood R’about in Newbury before heading to the West Mids. Approaching j13, saw the flashing yellows and cones…■■■■■■■ closed. Meant I had to run down to 14 and then back so I could get into Newbury. I put it out over Twitter so hopefully may have helped someone out. Came back down to j13 at 04:30ish and it was open…but was saying it was closed on trafficengland till 6am!
