First Night Out on Monday night - Advice please?

Never had a problem parking at Baldock, been doing for over a year now. Aside from the odd fridge its never noisy. Its also not out of the way, take the A505 from Letchworth which will dump you out on the A11 straight towards Thetford. Since he’s coming from Yorkshire, he’s not going to have that much time left especially if its busy in London. One more thing, come straight down the A1, don’t use the M1. Too many roadworks and traffic in the mornings, you’d lose a ton of time.

But then you have to fight your way around the north circular to Wembley, and the stopping and clearing tacho place, after all the traffic past Stevenage, is Mimms which is quite a bit further out.

One question not asked ! are you a chiller lorry ?

Good point, truckstops don’t like running fridges at night. In a services its just the other drivers who dont.

weeto:
If you do get all your drops off, there are a couple of BP garages on thetford bypass with free parking.

Both of which are load theft hotspots.

Depends on which time of day he’s all done by. It doesn’t matter which way he comes into London via the M1 or the A1, both run into the same road just a few miles apart. I say use the A1 because while you do get snarled up at Stevenage, its better than sitting in traffic around Luton/Dunstable which is compounded by the roadworks not to mention the world and his wife getting on at Flitwick. Stop at Baldock on the way down, clear your drive time then its just over an hour and a half give or take to get to Wembley. Once he’s done there, its a hop skip and a jump down the 406 which is easier going East then West to Chesthunt then Enfield. Once he’s done there he’s going to be pushed for time and given that this is his first night out, its best to be done and parked up with time left to spare instead of running into that last half hour. You have the choice of either Bircharger which reeks of ■■■■ and its full of our left hand drive friends or Baldock which is free on SNAP and you can use a fuel card. Downside is you don’t get a food voucher.

I.d have thought with an early start from yorks you could have all those off and be heading north again

Depends on what time it takes him to unload, if i get in and out where I need to be and don’t hit the traffic I might just be able to do that in a day from doncaster, would be a 10hr drive though and praying to the traffic gods

No mate, i’m driving for hallmark.
Re parking under a bridge or lay-by, I’ve been told to use a proper Lorry park or services.

Well, just got tipped at my third drop. Need to make a decision on where to head for. I’ve got 2:12 of five time left, but I’m pretty tired after the 5am start…

Sorry I can’t be of any help with a suggestion… But have you decided what to do? Where abouts was your last drop?

So, tired in Cheshunt with a reasonable amount of drive and work time left. For me that would be (breaks permitting) head up the A10 to a nice layby for a half hour kip, then continue to Royston, across to the M11 and Cambridge services for the night. Or possibly only up the A10 as far as the A120 and across to Birchanger for the night.

No, I decided just to call it a day and got into Waltham abbey around 16:00. Monged on the bunk fur a bit then went and had a shower, filled by a nice (free) meal of mixed omelette and chips and a pint ah lager.
Had a good chat with a couple of other sociable types, and have just got back into my bunk.
Good times!

Thank you - just one thing, I know it might sound stupid, but I’ve never had to consider it before: I just leave my card in, on rest mode, yes?

It’s up to you if you leave it in or not…Personally i always leave it in…But be aware that some motors flick the mode over to other work if you turn the ignition on…

I always take mine out, I know then there is no chance of me messing up.

We have dvsa who use our garage as a testing place one day a week . Couple of our lads asked about the card in/out when parked up they said that they prefer it to be left in but not a major issue. Leave mine in as a rule from mon to fri or sat somectimes

this is about as interesting as a stobrat episode…did he have a 9 and start at 1.a.m…did he take 11 and start at 3.did he know how to work the ins and outs of mr eberspacher…did his mam forget to call him and wake him.? was it a full fry,or an orange juice and organic free range nut cutlet…did he run empty back to yorks before running out of time?.he only had 1 full card to get there…all riveting stuff…

Thanks to all who gave me advice, it all went fairly smoothly. I met some interesting people along the way.
Sorry to diesel dog, who wasn’t sufficiently entertained.

Also well done for parking somewhere decent, for a meal and a pint and not joining the Boringtwatbrigade who park in lay bys and MSAs, curtains round and behind the wheel again on 8.59 :unamused:
A proper tramper.

I may go full time yet …making enquiries…

Not meaning to shoot Radar19 clean in the foot but Baldock is the worst idea in the world. Its in the wrong direction, horrendously expensive, horribly insecure and massively busy all night. You would have a safer and more restful night parking at Broadmoor.

Actually, Baldock is only one junction away from the junction with the A505 which joins with the A11 just south of Newmarket. It’s a little bit out of the way if your last drop was Cheshunt but not by more than the competition. You could also try the Cambridge services (also a bit out of the way) or Birchanger Green which is likely to be busier.
