Well yesterday was the end of my first month at clipper and like many had questionned as to whether I would have quit were very wrong
So far this month I have been doing a variety of things including loading trailers with either clothes or cardboard and I have to say it’s nice to be left in charge of something which is pretty important and manage not to ■■■■it up
The main job I’ve had over the past month is picking and although it gets boring at times it’s still pretty fun if you try and keep up with some of the agency workers and have more pick orders wrote down on your time sheet. Although in the second week I was told that I wasn’t picking enough but I then asked did you have to write the amount of picks per order down on your sheet as I was just doing the picks writing the job numbers down assuming they knew So since then my picks have gone from 34 an hour and have more than doubled it with a steady 80 picks an hour on an average day
Other things I’ve done included working on the bailer wrapping the used plastic up to get recycled some what and other bits and pieces but well up until yesterday I thought I was doing pretty well. Until I was called into the office to have a meeting with the manager of which I asked my line manager at the time if I was in trouble at all as usually when you get called into the office it’s not always a good thing. Well it wasn’t a good thing in fact I was in a lot of ■■■■for that matter
At my induction, I was told to swipe in 15 minutes before your shift so anywhere between 8:45 - 8:59 in my case yesterday. And when you end your shift to not swipe out on 9pm or anytime after that simply because it would mean they would pay you up until 9:15. So I’ve been clocking of at 8:52 - 8:58 anywhere between that time for example. Needless to say apparently they’ve flagged it up 6 times for leaving in this case at 6:52 and 6:54 and well if agency staff were caught doing it just once they would have been sacked immediately but I’ve been told if it happens again well you can kind of get the picture. Not to mention my wages are being docked as well for the time ‘lost’ when I was doing what I was told to do on induction (And have been doing for the past few weeks!) and my probationary period is being extended. Doesn’t half put you in a ■■■■mood when you think you’ve been doing a great job and been in everyones good books and finding you’re in line for the chop simply for doing what you was told to do
Oh and not to mention when they were going around asking everyone if they wanted to do overtime, I wasn’t asked to do it which could have made up for the time lost for the ‘six’ times they had accounted for. My line manager told me not to worry about it just to make sure I clock out at bang on 9 or 7 every time I go. It just ■■■■■■me off how they’ve let it happen 6 times when they could have told me the first time it happened and it would have been sorted there and then, like any other time someones had a problem with how i’ve done something I amended it and they couldn’t find a fault afterwards. Hopefully I’ll still be in a job next month But facts are I’m not quitting my job, and don’t want too. I’ll just do as I was told like they asked and have done with it.

If they want you to swipe in early, then that is unpaid work. If your start time is 06:00, then you don’t have to swipe until 06:00, no need for you to be there early, unless they want to pay you for it, IMHO
They told me the machine works every 15 minutes past the hour so if I swipe in at 8:45 i’m clocked in for 9am if that makes sense. And we meet at 8:55 for team briefing to be told what we’re doing etc. Even my line manager didn’t know why I was called into the office until the manager from upstairs started having ago. Didn’t and still don’t know what to think about it at the moment
Just don’t see how it’s fair that the other apprentice was offered overtime to go in yesterday and I wasn’t asked to stay an extra hour last night. Not sure if to bring it up on Sunday when I go back in or if i’m to just leave it and be on my best behaviour (Like I have been anyway ) and hope for the best. Because I’m still not sure how much they’re taking off of my wages yet.

Being the new boy is hard, you do have to ■■■■it and see for the first six months of a job, hang in there kid, I’m sure it will be OK soon, once the ropes have been well and truely learnt
He never said about anything else just me clocking off too early in his opinion. But I clock on usually at say 8:52 to have me booked in for 9. And I usually clocked off at 8:52 - 8:58pm as that is 12 hours. But it’s stupid how they’ve let it go on for 6 times it should have been flagged up the first time like many other people have said when I told them what happened. I’ll just see what becomes of it, and will ask next week if there is any overtime going because the manager who had ago at me said yesterday all ‘clipper staff’ to do overtime. But when they were going round asking I wasn’t asked. Would be nice to make up for the money I’m going to be losing next month
That sounds like a strange clock system! I clock in early (15mins or so) but don’t expect to get paid until my shift actually starts. When i clock out, i wait until my shift is supposed to finish or the next quarter hour if i’ve worked over. i thought most clock machines work on a quarter hour basis. If you clock out before the end of your shift, you’re not finishing your shift so no wonder the gaffer is cross!
Oh yeah! overtime is given to people as a perk.If you don’t do your minimum hours, why would they let you work over for a higher rate of pay! I know that wasn’t done on purpose, but that’s not the way the gaffers see it.
Don’t let it get you down, just put it down to your inexperiance and carry on. If the gaffers weren’t impressed with you, you’d have gone the same way as the agency staff…
Have to admit it’ was confusing for me when I first started using it, but I was just going by what I was told by the head HR woman at the induction as if clocking out at 9 bang on the dot would mean they’d pay me up until 9:15. So I was just doing what she told us to do, didn’t think I could get in trouble for doing what I was told.
I wouldn’t of minded doing the overtime to cover the time I lost due to my mistakes. I’m just glad I wasn’t sacked in all honesty I thought I was going to be when he started having ago. I spoke to my line manager after it when I was finishing off one of the orders to send upstairs and he told me not to worry about it just to make sure I clock out at 9 like he said. Not sure if there would be any point me asking if I could make the time up instead of him docking my wages.
Like you said just put it down to inexperience and carry on. Nothing more I can do really.
I havent used clock cards for about 35 years or more, but I used to work for a Ford main dealer and their system worked that for every 3 mins you clocked in late, you were docked 15 mins, so 9 mins late, docked 45 mins and so on.
One morning I fly into the yard because its 8.02am I have 1 min to clock in, skid on the Ice in my shiny Ford Zodiac, slide straight into the building housing the clock, smash the wall wreck the car, knock the clock off the wall and it smashes on the floor, jump out the wreck, grab my card turn the clock over and clock in, just in time, didn;t lose the 15 mins pay , cost me a wrote off Zodiac mind
As others have said, generally ignore whatever HR say. Supposedly they are their for the workers benefit but all the ones I’ve ever met have been on a company propaganda drive spouting out their positivity ■■■■■■■■.
Nice to see you’re not hating it yet. I started in a warehouse when I was 18 and stayed untill last October. Despite all the talk of young Brits being out of work, most who came in on the agency did bugger all work and lasted about a week, at least the Europeans put in effort untill they became full time haha. To be fair, if I didn’t get my forklift licence I doubt I would have lasted, as picking has to be one of the most mind numbing jobs going, at least with tipping a container you’re doing it as a team and can have a laugh.
Certainly don’t miss the warehouse, just the people in it as they were a good bunch. A job is a job though, especially at the moment so good on you for actually working instead of a fair few people I know who wouldn’t even be able to hack it in a warehouse.
