Felixstowe

Nationalised ports are not the answer, it wasn’t those who treated us like dirt 50 odd years ago, it was the men on the ground, our enforced ‘brothers’ in the TGWU, who thought they were a class above everyone else. :smiling_imp:

From this…

Morning’s Daily Telegraph business section.

‘Shipping consultancy Drewry forecast that container shipping companies will between them make “surreal” profits of $150 billion this year - as much as the previous 20 years combined.’

[, As far I’m aware the governement doesn’t employ drivers in the private sector or run any private sector haulage companies so explain what the government is supposed to do when the balme lies with hauliers for their failure to attract people into the industry and listening to people who use Flexistowe the general shoddy way that the port is run making it unattractive and uneconomical for hauliers.

The government could have carpet bombed the entire country with free truck parking with 5 star facilities
If it so choose to do so.

Or at least mandating industrial -estate- overnighting. No need for further encroachments on our verdant pastures.Inner city parking…revisited would be well within govermental reach.

That sounds good and simple to achieve, but they would not generally have facilities.

What do drivers want as a minimum when they park up for the night? A clean shower and toilet, and a wholesome meal to eat. Not rocket science, if the French can do it, anybody can. If you want an example, and my experience over the last 22 years is sadly limited, how about Stibbington Diner, A1 near Peterboro’ (yes I know they charge parking but that is traditional in Britain now and in any case the bosses pay) and that one in the long cut off lay-by on the A1 north of the Scottish border. Both excellent in the above regard.

Why no facilities?
If a council allow large companies, with lots of truck traffic to build and operate, they should take enough money from them to provide parking, basic toilets, and maintenance/cleaning. Why isnt it law to provide such? Nothing is free. Companies might have some excuse not to provide parking on their own land (but even that is arguable) but they use trucks, so they must pay for their supporting infrastructure. Dont let councils race to the bottom trying to attract business, make minimum provision a legal obligation.
Once again the old mantra about “the market providing” has failed. Business doesn`t care so we need law.
