I don’t know about the other but in the mean time I’ll sample the whisky I
don’t think the “boss” will want ferrying anywhere else today, we’ve done
the shopping, by the way is that you driving the F89 in your avatar great
old motor drove one when on for Siddle C Cook when we became part of
Tayforth before finally becoming BRS it had been a six wheeler heavy unit
they had to remove an axle to get the weight down so it could drag 20 ton.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hiya,
Well you can’t accuse me of not trying to raise a bit of interest, I’m surely not
the last remaining old Fearings driver breathing or am I ■■. there must be a
few pictures still in existence they haven’t been finished all that long.
thanks harry, long retired.

Tankerman:
Hi Harry,

I used to park at the Roma in Bury when I was on the Shell Stanlow to BP at Hull run. Fearings drivers would always pick us up and give us a lift home.
One lad eventually came to work for us and he told me he had acquired enough tea to last him a life time, know what I mean Harry?.
If I remember rightly their garage was somewhere between Brunshaw lane and Todmorden road, near Townley park.

Somebody mentioned Feather and Kent so I have posted photos of their lorries below.

Russell.

Morning Harry, do you mind if i copy the photo of feather and kent,s mandator .
Regards Richard.

Hiya,
Richard the picture was originally posted by I think Tankerman, (Russell) I don’t
have the know-how to post pictures and I don’t have any, a lifetime as a driver
and not one photo taken by myself never really got into photography I once got
myself a camera bought a film ( yes it was the days of celluloid took a couple of
lorry pics and the remainder family holiday snaps and not one turned out I have
bought cameras since but due to lack of interest they usually finish up in a box
situated under the stairs along with a trio of camcorders and a sat-nav that I’ve
never mastered or used my Missus calls me the original Useless Eustace, I think
it’s too late to retrain now. But thanks for the pic of the Feathers AEC I once,
my very first car had a similar reg No to this old girl was a 1936 Vauxhall the
letters in the registration were my initials wish I’d kept it

hiya,
Still living in hope that someone might just have something.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hello.
I am new to the forum, and happened to chance upon this thread about Fearings Transport of Burnley.I actually worked there from 1981 to 1983 as a mechanic and the Leyland Hippo recovery vehicle was my chosen mode of transport at the time. I took over from the legendary Henry Walker when he left. Brian Hall kindly put me through my class 1 and as well as towing vehicles in from all over the country with the old Leyland, I was relief driver in the holiday periods. Sadly I didn’t take many photos of the fleet then, wish I had.

Well done MWM you will have made Harry a very very happy man with this photo,he has been looking for someone who remembered Fearings for over 3 years now.

Hiya,
Thanks, “modelwreckerman”, the old Leyland wrecker wasn’t there when I worked
for Fearings firstly in 1957 then again a bit later in the 1960s, they were in the old
yard at Lebanon Street in those days and the main man was Matt Hall Brian’s dad I
can always remember getting told off from Matt for having an accelerator pedal
welded by the tradesmen at Rolls Royce aero engines near Glasgow it had broken
en-route to their factory and a smashing job they made of it too, so I gave the guy
a couple of quid and some tea for doing the job, that not being a bad backhander
in the 50s when I put my expenses claim in at the weekend I’d added a fiver for
getting the repair done and myself removing and replacing the part, you’d have
thought I was trying to claim a thousand quid the bellowing he made and only paid
up when Albert the then main fitter checked to see if the work had been done he
thrust the money into my hand saying don’t have any away from home repairs done
we’ll attend to that, so I counteracted by telling him any more trouble on the road
I would get the old girl to a layby and await a fitter to sort it out all the way back
in Burnley and I’d just sit there until a copper arrived and let him get in touch with
you back there, I wasn’t a bad fitter in those days and was knowledgeable enough
to get most vehicles of that era back home, I never did break down again so didn’t
get chance to put my threat to the test.
thanks harry, long retired.

You did right Harry, some of those old time bosses were zbs,if you hadn,t had it fixed you would have been a zb. one good thing in those days you could tell them to stuff the job and walk into another no problem,i can,t say I ever worked for a good boss except for myself.

Hiya,
Yes “shirtbox2003”,I remember on one occasion doing “cash in hand” jobs for
three different hauliers all within one week one did persuade me to stay on
and did start the following Monday and stayed there a while like you say it
was easy getting a start in those times there was a haulage yard just about
every corner, but they were good times we were robbed but we enjoyed it.

Hiya,
Before the thread dies the death and falls off the end of the world I’m
just wondering has anybody got anything to add.
thanks harry, long retired.
