0Great stuff, The late Brian Patterson was a great friend of mine , Im going up to Scotland shortly & I will be calling in to his place At Greenfields Nr Aberagie to see his two sons Rodney & Willy, Two great lads who take after their old man Brian, Whose full title was Francis Brian Patterson, Brian was a real good grafter, He had a place at Rowlands Gill years ago, Regards Larry.

Now that is a smart looking wagon, ready to work  . Regards Chris

Well ADR, Theres a story behind this Foden Its a conversion that old Brian did, Its got Seddon/Aki axles & chassis couple to the Foden front end, This was all done by the late Brian himself who was a bloody genius with such things, He contacted Foden to see if what he wanted to do was all up & above board, & They gave him the go-ahead, It was completed ina very short time & presented to the Testing Station at Perth & passed with full colours, Regards Larry.

Where was she cut to join do you know, just in front of the drive axles or just behind the cab? Was she still a double-drive with the Sed-Atki back end? Reason for asking because don’t remember seeing many Sed-Atki double drives over the years :open_mouth: . Foden sold loads of D.D.s, one of the biggest fleet orders of them I remember was from Ferrymasters, who ran them alongside Merc’s if I.I.R.C. Regards Chris

Well old Brian Liked the Sed/Aki setup, which was D/D, with cross on diff locks which I don’t think Foden had such a configuration at that time, This motor was for a special job at that time as far as I know, Regards Larry.

This kind of mod’ is probably much harder to do, or impossible ( I’m not a mechanic) with modern wagons & all there technology & computerised this/that & the other! And this type of knowledge/experience to be able to do a conversion like that, blokes like that are sadly a dying breed! Regards Chris

hiya,
Larry might remember this one, when Young’s of Leadgate fabricated a F86 Volvo
tractor unit and an old Leyland Octopus where the cuts where made I don’t know
but the outcome was a double drive rigid six wheeled tipper which I was the first
to take to Ravenscraig loaded with Thrislington lime, I remember it was a terrible
night falling snow and poor visibility but the “hybrid” travelled well and got me to
the tipping point in good time straight in to get tipped put the box up and as it
was about half way a loud crack and the lot came crashing down which meant the
remaining half load had to be shovelled fair dues to British Steel they did find me
a couple of lads to help and it was unloaded and the motor dragged clear by one
of their machines, the prop was removed and the chassis was held to the body by
using chains and tensioners, one side of the chassis had completely parted and I
was dragged back to Consett on a rigid bar, fortunately I could use the engine for
heating purposes, but it was the longest trip I’ve ever done and I think the laddie
doing the towing was in a hurry to get home, put the wind up me a few times.
thanks harry, long retired.

Put the bloody wind up you Harry, Come on me new old pal , A gale force wind couldn’t put the wind up you man, You are like me from the old school, You & I take everything in our stride, So fill them up Barman at the next Tasting, Regards Larry.

hiya,
That’s what originally drove me to drink Larry, being in Scotland at a time
of crisis and not being able to get a glass of decent stuff to settle me on a
long hazardous journey like that, I did however give the bottle a bit of big
licks before I went to bed for the day to prepare my story for Austin but I
needn’t have bothered, never heard another word about it and had another
motor standing this time empty to do a Skipton return trip for lime for a
day man to take to Scotland next day, and I was back, motor checked and
home in bed by about three AM.
thanks harry, long retired.

This Beast looks up to the job

You’ve taken the words out of my mouth,Lawrence  Yes.It could be Whitby Harbour. There is a Foden advertisement, and it appeared on the front cover of the COMMERCIAL MOTOR Magazine, which consists of a Foden S80 articulated lorry - either in Tilcon livery,or a blue, with a white roof, livery, parked next to Whitby Harbour’s Foden Low Line CC.8-12 Crane Carrier, painted red
Moomooland’s Foden photograph could be from the above actual Foden advertisement, which dates from around 1973.
I do recall seeing a Foden S80 articulated lorry, painted in a blue, with white roof livery, being based in Whitby - that was the one that could have appeared in that Foden advertisement.
By the way, since this is Bonfire Night,I did watch a Fireworks Display in Whitby Harbour  ,but it was’nt on the fifth of November,it was during one Summertime while we were on Holiday

Thanks for the info Valkyrie, I used to load there with tinplate for Tyneside Tin Printers at Fawdon but this wasn’t until the 80s, We also used to load coils for Carlisle too, The work was through a firm called Hogarth just outside Whitby, A good company to do work for may I add,Regards Larry.

Hogarth’s used to bring aluminium billets up to Century at Sanquhar. Eddie.

Aye Eddie we never did that job for them, But they allways gave us loads back whenever possible Like Ive said they were good people to work for, They don’t run motors anymore as far as I know, Regards Larry.
