over the years i think i’ve experienced most gearboxes , scammed gate change , fullers 9 & 13 speed , spicers ( crap )david brown , foden 12 speed etc , but the cream of the crop for me will always be the twin splitter . in the erf ec with the short gearstick it was unbeatable . cheers , dave .
Iam not as keen on the short stick Dave,I prefer the longer E series stick my self.
I wouldn’t have minded a crack at a Twin Splitter but one never crossed my path so to speak! Would probably have ended up playing more bum notes on it than Les Dawson did at his piano though so maybe not a bad thing really.
Hiya…i loved the 12 speed Foden but the 13 speed fulleris better…i remember getting a new Roadtrain
with a twin spliter (wow was i excited whoopieee i don’t think)the rep from Northwich come out with the unit at
8am one Saturday i got into work at about 11 he’d sat waiting to show me how to go on. off we pottered 2…3…
click split click. he said have you driven a twin splitter before !!!. i said i can’t remember but learned on
a 12 speed Foden when i was 19…he said what you wasting my time for…i said you was going to tell me something.
turned round and went back after 100 yards.the 12 speed and twin spliter are completely different boxes but a simular
idea. this is one i had but with its origanal owner
Bassetts had her and did a complete rebuild

Hey, were their drivers here who used the high crawler to close the gap between fourth and fifth (first high) ■■?
I never did, was Always said the crawler wasn’t strong as other gears and only made for less miles to do.

Eric,
Yes, all the time. Also used it to pull away when unladen and never had any gearbox problems. Certainly came in handy on Derbyshire banks when you had a 201 Gardner under the cab!

Pete.
Thanks Pete, stupid so you have 14 speed even 15 as you split if it worked out good spread.
So took more care to the box as my well-being
Driver will continue be born, but no Fuller’s any more
I only used it on the nine speed boxes Eric, didn’t really need it on the thirteen speeder as by then I had a 335 Perkins TX engine with plenty of power in an eight wheeler downrated to 31 tonnes.

this handyman my dad owned had a semi automatic 5 speed plus splitter (clutchless) , i think it was ex watney-mann. worked ok until the splitter switch on the joystick packed up and the fitter strapped an eaton button to the back of the column, made half gears a bit awkward to say the least, as you couldn’t change gear and split at the same time.
favourite box for me, either a twin splitter or eaton 13 speed. Worst , well i’m not overly fond of the 12 speed scania manual, no wonder most of them seem to be auto .
Hiya Avis rentals had some Scammell,s with just two pedals i thought they was 6 speed though with a spliter behind a 680

The Spicer seems to have come in for a lot of bad press, I had the 10 speed in an atki with a 250 ■■■■■■■ L10, absolutely loved it, fast clutch less changes and no aching left arm as with a new daf of recent memory!.

Our scammell handyman definitely 5 speed with the splitter switch on the short gearstick mounted on a column with the typical scammell gate arrangement , behind a 680, as you say 2 pedal job, nightmare to shunt with, and I banged my head on the roof changing down on the a5 near telford very quick through the box , left volvos for dead.
That’s almost the same type of gearbox we had in our Thornycroft Nubian Majors, except our gear lever was positioned below the steering wheel (where you’d find a indicator stalk). Two pedals and a fluid flywheel, great fun to drive!

Just noticed, there are badges for Scammell, Thorneycroft and Leyland on that dashboard!
