Euro, how long before we join?

I think we should join at the the same time as the Swiss, but don’t hold your breath !

JJSL:
Ok, so is it a case that the Germans are holding the rates ?

The rates are controlled by The European Central Bank who do what they feel is the best for the Euro as they see it. The problem is that because all countries in the Euro dont have the same economies and tax situations that the “one size fits all rule” cant possibly work. Eventually the ECB will have to alter interest rates because the increasing level of the Euro against the pound and the dollar will make the big boys eg Germany and France uncompetitive against the rest of the world and things will drop back to a degree.

Meanwhile the Tory party have just virtually ruled out them ever taking us into the Euro and an opinion poll suggests that about 75% of U.K is against joining.

The Tory’s say if they get elected (is there an election due?) we won’t join it under their rule.

Being that they are politicians I don’t believe a word of it if things look right.
At least the Labour party have offered us a referendum to decide

They offered us one of those over the Lisbon treaty too… and where did it go? Oh yeah, it got slightly re-written after the Irish no vote, and called something else, so we didn’t get the promised vote… Believe they’ll do different next time? :imp:

Being as we are talking about Politicians I don’t believe anything any of them tell us, apart from when they tell us they have awarded themselves an inflation busting pay rise, but of course they will have worded it differently

An election must be called within about 18 months by law. (not that that the law has ever bothered this bunch). The Tory party has always said that there would be a referendum on the Euro if ever they felt the need to join but what has been said this week does probably negate the need for one.

The labour party only said they would give a referendum on whatever the Lisbon treaty was called before when the French and Dutch said no and decided that as the name was changed a referendum was not needed because changes had been made and we as a nation were not capable of understanding what it was all about so in case we made the wrong decision they had better make it for us.
The tory and liberal parties wanted a referendum on the Lisbon treaty but were denied by government.

N.b The Irish voted NO last year but will be asked to vote again in 2009/2010 to try to get the right answer…

Yes it will be called a pay re-alignment system based on ones ability to think of ingenious ways in which you can fiddle more expenses. :unamused: :unamused:

sorry to bring this up, but reason pound is crap and britain suffering is because for too many years british people obsessed with buying houses cheap as possible then selling quickly for stupid profits whereas rest of europe buy property to live in possibly for rest of life. housing market here in spain only goes up when tourists from uk sell poxy terrace for 250,000 then walk into estate agents waving about wad!!!

So what made you buy in Spain ? did you sell up under the slag heap and then saw the sunshine ? I have a house in Sedella near Competa ,above Velez Malaga. I bought it to use twice a year for holidays ,but must say my preference is France and have lived her 20 years. If you drive down the national fron Nejha to Malaga, look at the amount of cranes that have been taken down and half finished houses / apartments have been boarded up.

the amount of unfinished buildings is unbelievable, all started on the premise of uk house sales being over inflated then when the bubble burst everything stopped. tried france first but found it harder to find full time legal work, plenty of seasonal stuff but nothing with pension or tax or contract. after 15 years paying tax in spain you qualify for pension. as for the euro its great for drivers not having lots of different currency for each country but i think uk should keep the pound. afraid didn’t live near slagheap as they are all in valleys and i’m a cardiff city boy

I have just read this mornings SUN newspaper (so it must be true), that the British Government ie:- us the taxpayer are going to have to find an extra £3.5 billion because our wonderful masters have managed to agree that all payments to the E.U will be in Euro`s not pounds and as the pound has fallen against the Euro it will now cost us even more for our E.U friends.
