The issue of the EU,its directives and consultations regarding its directives, the fact that such directives can’t apply to a non EU member state, assuming we aren’t to be an EEA member state, nor an AETR member state, the definition of Brexit means Brexit and May’s probable agenda v that of Farage among others in that regard, are all arguably on topic regards ‘this’ topic.
I haven’t got my head around what ‘whoosh’ is actually supposed to mean. But I could have just said if Brexit means Brexit who gives a zb what the EU want and why bother with any consultation put out by the EU.But that wouldn’t have been intelligent discussion.

OK I’ll help you out mate…
What sound does a jet plane make while ‘going over your head?’
Then you can carry on telling us how you know everything, and what’s best!
If you listen carefully you can hear, despite a few polite (and totally ignored) warnings the sound of Dieseldave being pushed into a corner with his finger hovering over the premod button.

If they are going to do white van man they might as well do Taxis and minicabs as well. Some of the shifts I’ve heard about them are eye watering longest one 36 hours.
Drivers hours rules and regs are there primarily to protect the driver,…US , let’s not forget that because many do.
Say what you like the hours we work especially the 15s on 9 off are too long in modern times, don’t come back with the old ‘nature of the job’ bs, …that is only so because of the way it has been set out
If the rules were 23 on 1 off, you would still get the heroes coming back with that mantra as well as the old …‘you are in the wrong job if you don’t like it’ ■■■■■■■■, just to patronise a driver with common sense, and stifle the argument.
The point I am making is that light haulage (don’t know a ■■■■ about plumbers builders and candlestickmakers vans so can not comment) has always been stupidly long hours.
I started on long distance on a Ford ■■■■■■ pick up, Carlisle to London or South Coast and back in a day was regular, working around the clock (and into next day) was commonplace.
I was young keen and ■■■■ stupid then so I did it willinglly and made a lot of money.
I know of a couple of firms that still do the same and also European work with light vans, so it is still going on 30+ years later.
Some regulation to save these idiots (as I admittedlly was) from themselves is needed, and about 30 years overdue…and while they are at it sort out the over complicated cluster ■■■■ that is the set of rules that we have to adhere to, and to cut the hours down to 21st Century conditions…and the employers will have to be made to adjust the wage to new hours ratio accordingly.
It was once the nature of the job/done thing to send kids down mines and up chimneys…but that was also changed.
Well, so far, apart from a slight Political divergence, their seems a general consensus that many of the current activities of quite a few White Van Operators and Drivers - the under 3.5 tonne brigade- is that they should be regulated. The reasons for this are sound:
Road Safety for the Drivers themselves
Safety of other road users
Levelling of a playing field.
Clearly, there is a degree of regulation at the moment for many of the under 3.5 tonne category under the Domestic Goods Regs but these date from 1968 and they show it and in my experience are never enforced. There were several high profile Serious and Fatal White van accidents in 2015/16 but none as far as I could see involved a Domestic Regs Prosecution, even though fatigue was a common denominator.
If these Drivers and Operators were brought under the O Licence system and the current EC drivers hours rules, many issues would be automatically tackled. The fact that it might not be easy or straightforward should not be reasons why it shouldn’t be gripped.
After all, if the EC go down the regulatory route for this group, then many GB & NI vehicles would need to conform in order to travel in mainland Europe. Furthermore, the DVSA would be able to Police the European under 3.5 tonnes running here. Just because we are leaving Europe does not mean we can or should ignore it and not all EU legislation is badly thought out. NB I did say “NOT ALL”
