ERF trucks and the image

A bloke i worked for had one we was in the pub by the yard when he turned up with it came out to have a look and an oldish fella who had plenty of miles under his belt and driven all sorts of weird and wonderful piped up with ERF built in Britain fell apart everywhere.

But being a proper nut and bolt motor you’d be able to fix it with a couple of spanners and an oily rag while you were sneaking a sly 45 at one of your drops.

The EC11 we had did like to detach it’s turbo pipe at least once a year…

What does ERF stand for?

Edwin Richard Foden.

Would DAF be David Arthur Foden? :open_mouth:

A guy called Hub van Doorne started his own business, started in 1928 as an engineering workshop for repairs then went into specialising in the production of trailers and semi-trailers. The name of the company was changed to ‘Van Doorne’s Aanhangwagenfabriek N.V.’, or D.A.F. for short.

:grimacing: :grimacing:

I swap the Scania I drive tomorrow for an ERF as long as it had a twin splitter.

I have sold my vest collection on ebay, the egg stained one fetched a good price.

good comeback

Drove an EC11 on and off for 2 years, shame by the time I got it had gone round clock once and had no 6th gear

We also had a couple of common rails, and 2 bright yellow things (not sure on the model), which weren’t bad, but the commons were autos and would wheel spin in every gear, even in the dry, and a gear box fell out on me on the 25 in one of the yellow perils

My favourite was a little 55 plate manual 4x2 we had, which I had when i first started. Utterly crap for farm work, but a fantastic little motor. I’d have it back in a heartbeat

Those Steyr cabbed ones might not’ve had driver appeal, but they had a good payload for 4 and 6 wheel tippers.

That mob from the west country always immaculate motors had a few of them. Be fair I’ve only driven the ec ones and they wasn’t a bad motor.

What does MAN stand for then?

Only with an Olympic Cab and Twin Splitter

Muckaway:
and it was meant to be one of the last ECs built (W reg).

Ive seen an 05 plated EC :open_mouth:

The Germans have a very rude and uncomplimentary version of it

Well I know here it stands for Mean And Nasty
It actually stands for Machienfabric Augsburg Nurnburg or something like that

Doubt it would have been an EC. They stopped at W reg as Muckaway has said. More likely to have been a MAN cabbed ECT if it was on an 05 plate.

Nope, it was definitely an EC and not an ECT, I did a double take when I saw it, must have been a very late registration and was a fairground truck…

Possibly a private plate? I can’t see an EC cab being left around 5 years after production finished. There’s a local haulier/groundworker near us that has a 51 plate MAN cabbed ERF (whatever the day cab was called) and it’s been a reliable lorry. I did read somewhere though that the ECS was a bag of crap.

The first truck i drove two days after passing my C+E was a EC11…

was for Nightfreight… and was a ■■■■ easy run … Edinburgh to Glasgow X3 runs…drop and pick up trailers … :sunglasses:

still made funny tunes trying to master the gear box but i did’nt care i was out on the road alone having only just passed my test… :sunglasses:

A fave truck for the circus and showmen, fair ground truck.

Learned to drive in a C-Series with a Spicer that was almost as old as me so I suppose I’ll always have some connection with ERF. The Eaton Twin Splitter always seemed to go stiff in the EC due to the cable set-up on that short gearstick didn’t it??
Never had any such issues with the Foden equivalents (e.g. 4000 series) as they had a different stick/linkage etc.

Here’s an EC 6 from a local fair/carnival…Ex J. Stephens builders’ merchants by the look of it and been fitted with a Ringfender coupling for drawbar duties…
