My first unit at William Kirk was an E12 375 4x2. Was far superior to the other E series we had at the time and was quite high powered for the time! We used to run full weight with flour from Bishops Stortford and the FH12’s we had couldn’t keep up and certainly didn’t pull as well! We had 2 of these the other was a 6x2 and both were supposedly ex Irish trucks but don’t know if that was true. Think the reg was J573 TSC.

The reg you mention is an Edinburgh one, Regards Larry.
we had a very early 325tx in a e series unit on a H reg 1990, and it sounded fantastic, pulled like a train, and was ver econimcal even on tipping, but it was too early it easily the worst engine weve ever had, it started blowing headgaskets from 18 months old,and was found that liners were dropping causing the headgaskets to blow,in the end we took it out and put a 14 litre ■■■■■■■ in out a roadtrain, months later we had the perkins done up by the local perkins agent central diesals I think, and put it in a 401 8 wheeler it lasted about a year and started the same problem, it was a brilliant engine just wished we has waited a year or so. I can still hear it now with twin splitter it sounded brilliant.
I’ve not seen a EC12 on the road for quite some time, I had assumed they were popular with exporters. Always liked the Eagles and TX - E12 with a twin split was a grand motor and always seemed quieter to sit on than a ■■■■■■■■
Moved an ex-MoD Scammell/Daf 8x6 DROPS lorry from MoD Witham sales a while back, fitted with a 800 series engine. Was this a TX by another name or a different variation of Eagle? Almost certain it had R-R on the rockers.
The 800 was the forunner of Tx, 1st fitted in the Roadtrain at 350bhp. Dont think it differed too much from the Tx engines.
Would that be around the same time as the 340 LI ?

the 340 LI was a true roller great engine Crossley & Evans still have a 2 86 ERF C series with the 340 ROLLS they a 4 wheeler chain lift skip wagon with draw bar coupling they owned them from new they also got a 96 8 wheeler EC14 olympic hook loader on air with the 525 ■■■■■■■ and 2 94 6x4 EC14 500 ■■■■■■■ Rest cabs chain lift skip wagons on air all rare motors

The 340li was still around at this time, as Seddon Atkinson and ERF were still fitting them, but this engine did replace the Li as far as i know Dan, must of been around 97’.

I remember them getting that Hookloader EC 525, that was and still is an awsome spec for an 8 wheeler, Yuil & Dodds had a 525 and 500 EC14 8 wheelers at around that time, bit on the heavy side but journey times must of been slashed!!
Still know where there’s a new 410 tx, never ran.
Tx had no return valves on injector pump and with dirty injector would blow all the fuel out of the fuel system.
I believe it the only engine you can build with the block the wrong way round. Some might know others.
Had a roadtrain with a 350 /800 on a f reg
Erf 325 put to 410tx 13 speed 6x2. Real good motor.

Hello escortg3, what was the 800 like, and how did it compare wiyh the Tx you had after?
Chris.
Not a lot of difference, tx had a bit more dig and a nice whistle but they won’t standerd. Used to go up to Shrewsbury to rolls and doss about with a bloke called dave Huxley, top bloke and done all the experimental suff with these engine.
Rolls had a road train that they used to put other engines in to test them to see what they were like.
Dave done the engine for mel baker truck racer / masons transport .
Perkins purchased RR Shrewsbury approx two years prior to HS putting Gardner up for sale. By the time Gardner came to market Perkins had spent approx £3M developing the Eagle into the TX, so the die was cast. It should also not be forgotten that RR had a very strong relationship with the MOD especially for the larger RR vee engines. The 6LXDT was redesigned completely, in house with Perkins input, to meet a bus/coach market which RR had never mastered. The LG1200 engine then became what the 6LXDT should have been in the first place, and, could have sat alongside the TX in a consolidated range to meet vairious automotive applications. The end story is one of inter company politics and a major decline/consolidation within the UK and European OEM customer base. The TX turned out to be a good product but as with a lot of UK equipment, too little, too late.
