What do the Slowbart owner drivers actually own? From my viewpoint its seems tinkles and willy warmer are taking advantage of the fanboys with too much cash and a C+E licence.

typical of on here, anyone attempts to better them selfs and its negative comment after negative comment, folks on here just hate the thought some may just make a sucess of there lifes. i bet if richard branson, bill gates came on here a few years ago you of all been saying fruitcakes :unamused: :unamused: ,and look where they are,if you beleif in youself, the worlds your oyster.

The whole point is that it is a spurious claim that “you will be bettering yourself” do you really think this is a charitable move by Stobarts to give drivers independance. What a lovely world you live in. It is a boardroom decision to give them greater control and less responsibility, not to speak of the fact that they will have run a model through the computer and have the percentages worked out so the bottom line is better for them with less “liability” I guarantee for a short while any one daft enough to sign their lives away will be better off with good runs and more money, then reality will kick in and they have you by the balls, tighten the screws and the sleepless nights and suicides will start along with reposessd houses and divorce. All they are after is a better balance sheet and its your cash they will use for no return

It appears to be the same as the quarries have been doing for years… Some will do well, some won’t. A lot depends on whether your face fits, whether you are prepared to take whatever work they give you without whinging, and whether they actually have the work to give you! The more that do it, the less rich (!!) pickings there will be to go around…

Ady. If you’re having a go, good for you  You will never know until you try but you may need to take a chill-pill or two…if you rant and rave at the planners like you do on here, you ain’t gonna make much

Take this as advice or dont but

1]They will use your naivety to their advantage

2] The first time you are in genuine need of a helping hand watch them dissapear into the woodwork

3]Count how many times they say “Its your wagon” or “welcome to the real world”

4]Hold you over a barrel more than they can now because they own you more than when you could walk away, all you have done is firmly shackle yourself to them, its not brainsurgery!!

One very big difference that you appear to have missed, Richard Branson and Bill Gates worked for themselves, not subcontracting to their employer.

I wager Mr Tinkler and Mr Stobart will have no problem letting you fill up your fuel tank to the brim while you are buying fuel from them :stuck_out_tongue:

has ady 1 actually going to do this???it soon could be ady -100000

This is a right stitch up. You’re not an owner driver as you don’t own the vehicle! You’re not free to work for who you like, as you say, I’d love to see someone say, “Sorry can’t this week, I’ve got a Madrid, try me next week.” If anyone takes this up then good luck to them, they’ll really need it.

how many more times : :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: ,you dont need to work for anyone else, the works GAR,GAR,GAR,GAR,stobarts are GAR,GAR,GAR you worl,i bloody wish folks on here would listen for once :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp: :imp:

Have you done it then Ady?

YES,just sorting out finer details :exclamation: :exclamation: ,cant say anymore, sorry

Ady1, if you need a driver for the odd day/weekend, give us a shout!

why not be a owner driver for stobarts,if someone wants to do it let um,they will be doing nothing differant to when Rugby cement went o/drivers in the 1980"s or the cement mixer"s and tipper driver"s who are owner driver"s all working in the company colour"s they are O/D for, stobarts are no differant,as for the driver"s they are making redundant you only have to look at the climate to realise it had to come,i see nobody as slagged of wincanton who are laying off 150drivers or DHL who are shutting 3 depots or Yodel who are closing 45.yes…45 depots, seems only stobarts are there to kick and be in the wrong by some really narrow minded driver"s who are probably jealous if the truth be known

Am I missing something here? How can you be an owner driver if you don’t own the vehicle? It seems to be closer to a franchise.

And what does GAR mean?

GAR
“A term used towards male characters and individuals who are so overwhelmingly manly that your own masculinity is absolutely buried, leaving you naught but a whimpering, swooning girl-child before them”

Thats exactly how i see it Sid.
Another thing that suprises me, is how are they shedding jobs and then advertising for more workers (even on a self employed basis), i thought the work had to really not be there before they could get shut of you, or they had to offer you alternatives?
If Stobarts think that one man on one truck (i.e tramping) is not paying i’m struggling to see how one man will make it pay for himself. I thought they relied on economies of scale.
There’s a reason that one man bands are going to the wall slowly as are smaller hauliers, maybe Stibarts have just found the answer to reverse that trend? I’d doubt it.

I think it’s a great idea on Stobarts part. They call it being an owner driver rather than a franchise as most drivers aspire to being an OD. They change a small part of their workforce to a flexible working system. By that I mean they can customise the size of their workforce based on the amount of work they have. The employed drivers work their hours as do the ‘ODs’ and when the workload reduces the ‘ODs’ get less work. The guarantee they have to pay will be more cost effective than having an employed driver stood. Similar to having a reduced permanent workforce but having more flexibility in the form of agency staff or subcontractors. If there’s no work they can turn the wage tap off.

Yes I agree. At the end of the day its about changing the goalposts and exploitation of peoples enthusiasm, in a nutshell who,s going to work harder , a man with money and an ego invested or a man with an ego and nothing to lose. I feel sorry for whoever jumps in as Ive run my own business for twenty odd years and employed half a dozen lads, its tough out there and the minute you change places you are out in the cold, and its a lonely place to be, it takes a special sort of person and as Ive said before drivers in the main arnt it and thats where the exploitation will come in. they will be like a fish on a hook or an addict to a dealer

Without getting personal, most of the posts about drivers miffed with Stobarts are actually about drivers miffed with their planners, what makes any of the prospects think the planning will improve because the drivers now have to earn a profit instead of being given a wage

There’s a striking similarity to the way the pub trade went several years ago, when they sucked punters in with the dream of running their own pub, for just a small investment.
This was about the time when the coal miners & steel workers where being laid off and where receiving huge financial redundancy packages.
The punters where falling over themselves to buy into the dream. Except that the only pub experience they had was proping the bar up swilling beer before staggering off home.
The list of people I knew who lost the lot is extensive… divorces, financial ruin & sucide where the concequences.
The irony or the recent TV shows glamourising the Stobart dream is perfect publicity for the boardroom boy whip up hysteria enough to launch this “new idea”… it only goes to show that someone will take em up on it. Whether it ends up in tears has to be seen.

No doubt if those considering it ain’t smart enough to pass the Nat’l & int’nat’l CPC there will be someone willing to rent out theirs??

I,m sorry for being slow but I dont understand your point. I,m not being funny I sometimes fail to see the obvious

Common sense would tell you not to fork out cash to get a job.

Sorry oldsid, just that I read more on these forums than most, so tend to follow the stories. A lot of the prospects for ownership at stobarts also complain that the planners cannot run a ■■■■ up in a brewery.
