Dummy Spitting Episode Over Tolls

Well I back Lib on this one as I have had companies refuse to reimburse for night out maoney, Tolls and phone. Maybe you have just been lucky Laybybob

No. I use my common sense and take ample cash with me to ensure that such situations don’t arise.

I bet you get it back when you get to the yard though don’t you

or maybe you like being taken advantage of, in which case it is attitudes like that that cause the problems for those of us who

  1. Don’t want to bankroll a company
  2. Can’t afford to bankroll a company

Every pound I have to pay out of my own pocket is pound that comes off of our food bill or mortgage, And I cant afford to do that.

:open_mouth:

I just don’t understand where this modern day big-attitude thing comes from  . You’ll all the same you young 'uns - refusing to take wagons out because they’ve got a small chip in the screen or there’s a scratch on the bumper or it’s not an 05-reg plate XF530 with all the bells and whistles. :unamused:

For your information, I used to drive a G reg Volvo F10 with a shafted fuel injection so it surged every five mins :unamused:, but I’ll never run bent. I’m not bothered about the type of motor I drive, so long as the money’s their at the end of the day, because I’m earning a living.

I remember times in the past when I’ve filled up the company’s wagon on my own credit card to the tune of £250 on one occasion because of an oversight by the gaffer and to get him out of the [zb] and here you are moaning about a £3 toll and ‘I can’t afford to take that sort of money with me’ quoting another.

It’s no wonder the haulage industry is in such a mess. Drivers only doing stuff if there’s something in it for themselves. Marvellous. :unamused:

I have in the past, filled a vehicle up on my card and had the money back. He was a decent bloke to work for - which is why I did it, sadly no longer trading - does that say something? Would you do this if you knew you weren’t going to get the money back? Trouble is, times have changed, I’ve had too many companies try to screw me, I’ve just had to take one agency to court for £300, owed as holiday money from 24th January - maybe I’ve just got that sort of face, or maybe I’ve been on agency work for too long :unamused:. If I’m treated well by the people I’m working for, then I’ll do my utmost for them. If not, I’ll go elswhere, as you say, but don’t jump to the wrong conclusions will you .

Just to add… it’s part of the reason I’ve got such a bad attitude towards work in general and find it hard to stick.

Out of all the jobs I’ve had, only one has actually ever treated me completely fairly and honestly. Things like this can make life a pain in the arse, you end up arguing over trivial stuff or in my case just walking out the door to avoid the bother.

No I didn’t, but any expenses (including my own ‘free minutes’ phone usage which I billed at 50p/minute and in some instances also OS maps) have always been credited back in the expenses column on that weeks wage slip.

Just because one company hasn’t paid your expenses doesn’t make it fair to tar them all with the same brush though. There’s good and bad in every walk of life.

I’m not, but trust me, this one I’m entitled to moan about .

Well, if it’s in direct line of sight of the driver and not in his periphial vision (i.e. an MOT failure) then that driver would be in his rights. Even windscreens are part of a companies running costs…

… there’s supposed to be something in it for themselves; it’s called money (wages) and it’s supposed to be in their pocket, not the gaffers bank account!!

Overall, I’m with Lib on this one. I think we’ve got to be aware that it may well be the ‘thin end of the wedge’. The odd toll this week, all the tolls next week, refuelling next week…

Drama Queen is a poor choice of words to use between friends (we are all friends on here, aren’t we??!!) on these DB’s.

All I can say is that I would never expect any driver working for me to fund the running costs of the company from his or her own pocket, be it for one day, one week or however long. Why the hell should they?

My lot would reimburse me I’m sure but as I am a first proffession pauper I get the company billed.

liberace, when you go through the tolls then round the bend to the roundabout, i hope you get in the correct lane at the lights! this is a light hearted comment! it never ceases to amaze me how many people get it wrong!

I have paid out to save the company I am working for at times, if something happens that only costs a few pounds to sort out, then I have no problems with that.
What I do have a problem with is being exspected to pay out & then wait untill the end of the next week to be reimbursed.
I have done jobs where it was normal practice to claim at the end of the shift, due to office staffs duty patterns, thats fine by me as I only have a few hours to wait.
I have also paid out on deisel as I knew I would get it back, in cash, when I got back & I was happier doing it that way than having thier cash in my pocket, which is what some of the other drivers did.
My phone is for incoming company calls only & my wallet & whats in it is my property not the companies I am working for.
If I am paid by the hour, but not a known & exspected toll up front then I know which way I will go & it does not involve fewer hours & a toll.

I know what you mean. I wondered why my box was telling me to keep right .

what the hell has the severn bridge got to do with it we were talking about the DARTFORD CROSSING A £2.90 toll not a £14 50 toll

some firms give you cash when you start for tolls and out of pocket expenses and then you claim it back so in theory you have the money first… when i first started at longs of leeds they give you £50.00 in your first pay packet and that is for all your out of pocket expenses then when you dip into it attach the receipt to your clock card and you get it back when you leave they deduct the £50 from your final wage macfarlanes in leeds i think give you £150.

but this is where the problems come in … when the drivers receive their float up front then treat it as a bonus :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:    then want want the money for tolls and taxes maps as extra forgeting they have already had it and then when they leave finding their wage is £50 quid lighter and get the hump.

Fine they dont want to pay for the tolls, tell em neither do you and say you will go anti-clockwise round the M25 cos its free that way, plus you make some extra hours. yes two can play that game, that I can.

They expect you to pay that as well :open_mouth:. I went a bit further into it today and it’s just the agency drivers they expect to pay , as they’re driving hire units and don’t have the tags :unamused:. Still waiting for the money BTW, I’ll hopefully get it back in my wages, if I don’t it’s bye bye and move onto another client.

What a con!!! the tags are not vehicle specefic so they can be issued to any driver/unit. Parcelforce used to sign the tag out to you at the beginning of teh shift and then you signed it back in at the end… A far better idea if you ask me.
