Driving with the hiab up

Was tipping in a place where they do crushed concrete right by the blackwall tunnel on the southside a few years ago and a bloke tipped a grab lorry dropped the body and drove straight out despite all the bibbing shouting and light flashing and then one of the workers chasing him in a van. Buy it was to late to stop him wiping the signs at the tunnel entrance out and hitting the old entrance arch.
Don’t know what happened but would imagine it’s a pretty bad nick

I know of one member on here’s father hitting the M25 bridge at bignells corner when he left his HIAB up! It crashed into the bridge landing on a uninsured car .

never left the hiab up or legs out. but once left the pads on site ended up having to go back for them, shame as i was nearly in the yard when i realised and the pads were down in thetford

yes that was me friday leaving the yard with the hiab 30 foot up in the air… was loaded up ready to go and usually put the crane back down, had to run in the office, got distracted , came out jumped in the cab and off i went thinking i had already put it down, just thought i was i popular with all the lights being flashed at me, luckily i only made 500 yards down the road before i realised but , just goes to show how easily it is done, has anybody else suffered momentary lapses like this?..

Don,t you have any in cab warnings I have a real noisy alarm and a very annoying flashing amber light, but it is still easily done if you are distracted,I usually ignore everything until I have finished my routine.

Some are no louding than the indicator bleep.

hiab is on rear end of a 55 plate merc axor, has grab attachment for blocks etc, it was raised to be loaded by forky so legs were not down, there is no buzzer but a big red warning light to say boom or legs incorrectly stowed, this can remain on a lot of the time as it only goes out when crane is set perfectly centred , boom in and flat on the deck, only possible when bed is empty… so you can see how it could of been possible to of left it up, easily distracted,

We had an old boy at Atkinsons who used to do it all the time.

He had spent twenty years doing a night trunk for a crisp factory so he was a bit out of his depth on a Scaffold Lorry.

If the fitters wern’t out fixing his hiab they were collecting his brothers from whatever building site he left them at.

I’m betting there will be some head scratching as to why he had his brothers with him. I do know what you mean but it’s more fun to not say.

Instant sack at our place…Needless to say there is a far amount of Paranioa with leaving my HIAB up!!!
Pads used to go Diffy all the time but now they have burnt your Reg Number on them…they dont disapear so much now…I wonder why■■?

it’s not that much of a secret

Maybe not, but I’d say there would be a good few who don’t know. Maybe if enough people ask then the secret could be revealed.

I’d guess at his brothers being his lifting straps or chains… been there, done that, even got the bloody tee shirt.

I think if we’re honest we all do. God knows I have, and in my particular job there’s plenty of scope

Downham, Gidea Park, Maldon & Benfleet tomorrow.

If yours is JBZ then it was you I saw a Birchanger roundabout around lunchtime.
