Ask yourself “Whats the daftest thing that other roaduser is going to do?”
Then you are ready if they decide not to disappoint you

Years ago ,my old man said to me . . . ." When driving always expect the unexpected"
Then he shouted “BOO”
Wasnt expecting that,■■■■■ myself

If you are up on the back of the truck or trailer always use the steps to get back down, never jump.
If your young and fit this might seem trivial at the moment, but take it from me it soon catches up on you .
I had an operation on my left knee 6 months ago , I’m due to go in again within the next couple of weeks for an operation on my right knee and to cap it all
I was told this morning that my left knee needs further surgery. :imp: :imp:
Not so trivial now !!!

For a book on such matters…

The little things you don’t get taught and might not get chance to ask

For instance; My first run (which was through an agency) was in an 18t curtain sider - How do you open / close the curtains!? I’d seen it done but that’s about as much as I knew. There wasn’t anyone about to ask so I ended up asking the T.M. (friendly chap). He didn’t know but I worked it out for myself and ended up showing him!

Tail lifts too, I know they’re not all the same but a rough idea helps.

The only thing I’d really struggle with now is a tipper - I know sweet F.A. about them!

Another tip, don’t be nasty about us wombles. You never know when you’ll need a lane one closure from us to get an oddside puncture changed.

  • If you don’t know, get out and ask.
  • If you can’t see, get out and look!

Plan Plan Plan.

Before you move, plan your route, plan your breaks and plan where and when you want to finish
While you are driving, plan what you want to do and what you will do if the worst happens.
When you are manoeuvring, plan how you are going to get the truck where you want it.
When you go in a tight space, plan how to get out.
Before you join a motorway, plan where you are going to leave it.

“An oddside puncture”

When you got odd wheels on…square ones or oval ones…

Don’t be bullied by people at your delivery points. The line ‘We always get artics in here’ is a favourite. If you don’t think you can get it in there then you probably can’t. You are the driver and what you say go’s

always check that you can get back out of where you just got in, just because you can drive in doesnt necersarily mean you can reverse out and vice versa, rember angles change when turning going forward and turning reversing!

Went to a pub in Hull in an 18tonner not long back, backed onto the car park and the manager came out and started spouting about how great it was that I’d actually parked on the car park not the road. It had been tight to get my little FL rigid in but all he could say was how the tradeteam boys get in but our artic drivers couldn’t. As I was leaving tradeteam turned up in an artic day cab FL with a little dray trailer. We deliver there usually in an FM12 with a 10meter trailer on it :unamused: :unamused:

Don’t get mad, get even! If you’re getting grief at a delivery point ( What have you brought that for?, I’ve got no room, You’re a day early, etc), just ask them to sign the notes to say they’ve refused the load and take it away. It’s amazing how many times they’ll change their mind :smiling_imp:

If you have to block the road to make a delivery, do it! If an irate person gets out of their car to have a go, DO NOT back down. Tell them calmly but firmly that you’ll be finished soon even if you won’t!

carry some cutting gear for clamp removal.
don’t trust a ■■■■.
don’t be afraid to ram a vosa car off the road as it could be hijackers.
■■■■■■■■■■■■ is good for you. It’s the most exersise you’ll get all day.

If possible sit in the seat on the left side of the cab, try and get some other mug, sorry driver sit in the right. :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

sat navs are a waste of time as not all of them show routes for HGV’s on were to avoid low bridges etc i always look at the map before leavin the depot to get a rough idea on the route  And NEVER take your boss as a drivers mate !!! all they will ever do is criticise your driving. I took mine one day he only holds an operaters licence but no hgv licence he criticised me one to many times i threatened to pull over on the hard shoulder and he could drive if he was so perfect his reply was “what this ? i can’t drive it” That shut him up

If they persist just tell them the longer you spend arguing with them the longer it’ll take you to do the drop.
