I may have a chance of a driving assessors job at the company i work for, a vacancy will be coming up soon and would like to apply ,the thing is i dont know how drivers would look upon it because of a couple of reasons, first of all my experience i have 7 years class 1 a total of 11 years hgv driving, would you be judgmental on me assessing you say you had 25 years experience ? then there is my age, 34 some might say still a kid , whats he know , most of the drivers at my place are 50 years plus ,. I think i am up to the job , i love my job and i am doing a job that i allways wanted , i know the job and in my opinion how it should be done , how would you feel if it was you i was assessing , other parts of the job include store assements and route assements i want this job but want to be taken seriously ,
mate, dont be stupid,
you have been in job 11 years, so what if they dont like it if you had been in job a year then they could moan … but 11 thats a lot behind you age is nothing go for it and if you get it good luck.
Providing you’ve had the necessary training to assessor and judge other peoples driving i cant see any reason why your age would matter.
your experience is plentyful for the job in question.
however, due to the content of your post. do you think you have the required confidence to carry out the job?
Only ever had one assessment, the guy who did it had only had his hgv for two years and previous to that he’d been a white van man, so I think you qualify with 11 years
Thanks for the replys , i think the job would suit me and i do have the confidence, as for the qualifications that would be part of the job as theres a department that job would come under ,theres other assessors in house and they have progressed to driver training instructors, as for judging others driving , i think we all do that , might as well get paid for it
if you feel that you have the confidece in doing the job, then go for it.
start climbing the ladder. its never too early. good luck and i hope you get the job.
The normal qualifications for this job is to be the biggest ■■■■■■■■ on the books who can’t turns round on any patch of land smaller than a football pitch without removing several mirrors, knows absolutely everthing and must be right because they can shout louder than everyone else, usually has the ability to empty a crowded mess room by just walking in there and has the roadcraft of a flattened hedgehog.

Not sure how I can speak for people who I don’t know.

No but prepare to be challenged, to justify your reasoning, if you start spouting what I might consider to be Bowlocks.

Not a problem.

So why change for something that will take you away rom that which you enjoy doing? Don’t assessors have duties which will take you away from that which you currently enjoy? Ambition is OK and if you want to progress into other aspects of transport then good luck to you.

And is your opinion the same as the company’s? If there is a conflict in those opinions then don’t be in any doubt whose will take precedence. If you fancy it go for it, be prepared to lose some “friends” along the way and make sure you have a way back to your current role if things don’t work out as you hope.

Come on get off the fence and tell us what you really think.
Yeah but he is right lol
you can do it anyone can
go out in truck with the driver
if he puts the fear of god up you he’s failed
if he dont he’s passed
jone done driver assessed
there may be a tad more to it and it may include girlies but basically thats it
Whats the need…a driver has the qualifications for the job anyway via his licence…then he has a CDPC…+ whatever other skills he has gained…So there i am, been there…done it…got the T
shirt…been in the industry 48 years, and some snotty nosed kid comes up, introduces himself as an assesor, then says i have to ask you to pick up a trailer, or drop a trailer, and there he is with a clip board in hand ticking boxes…then he wants to watch you as we drive through the gate, ticking boxes, writing down the way you drive, do you cross your hands ( yeah been doing it for 48 yrs ) how you approach r/abouts/junctions, how you change gear and when ( is it in the green band or the red ) etc etc, would i resent it…bloody right i would.
What really annoys me at our company is they are always introducing some kind of training ( leaves me out- dont know why ) we have 3 driver trainers, ones on international work, the other 2 are up the road most of the week, now theyve brought an outsider in, ( cos hes got an ology or something ) and earns loads of dough from the firm, but anyway, we also use a lot of agency staff, and none of them gets training, so they fill trucks up with red
, lie on the catwalk to connect the airlines, after connecting the trailer, ( we only run fridges ) etc, etc so theres the mistake, train the inexperienced, not the experienced.
Im 28 and im the driving assessor at my depot, do agency drivers mostly. Only hassle i get is from the core drivers on the ■■■■■■■■■
You’re just showing a driver how the company wants the job done and if they have the skills to do it. You’re not training anybody so nobody should feel patronised.
if you do get the job, get them to all the assement, in a erf twinsplitter, as you wouldn’t have to take half of them out on the road, as they wouldn’t get it out of the yard

Too right n all!
Thanks for all the replys , mixed response but thats what i asked for , i dont want to be the type who makes out he knows it all because i dont i have made mistakes and will carry on making mistakes i wouldnt want to make out am better than the person next to me , i have a passion for my job and still would be a driver at heart ,as for me saying i know the job and how it should be done i think i do and in time pass on what i know to others , the assessors we have already are a good bunch they still mingle and when not assessing go out on the road. Yes i want to climb the ladder in a industry i like being in , the way i look at it the more you know the better and if i dont go for the job it may be a lost opportunity

The secret of being a good assessor or trainer, is not so much in proving that you are better than other drivers, but in dealing with attitudes like the one above. Just remember that you can only write down what you see, so if some split arse driver wants to show you what an absolute idiot he is, just remind him of this fact, and that the report goes to his manager, if he still insists, let him crack on, you will still have a job even if he doesn’t. Try not to be a “jobsworth” and accept that there are people with far more experience than you, learn from them and try to show them that systems and methods change. Revving the guts out of an old leyland roadtrain might have been the best way to get moving, but in a modern truck all it does is burn fuel, which cuts down on bonus payments. Talk to people with respect and a sense of humour will get you a long way towards being accepted.
I was the depot assessor at TNT Croydon and I was 32 with 11 years experience. None of the lads had a problem with it and one of them was 50+ with conti experience. Some of the assessments might take some years of your life though
. One relief driver tried taking a flyover at 50
and I was looking over the edge onto the A3 below
. He didn’t seem to have mastered the art of listening to slow down. Sorry if you’re reading this Rana but I’m now 46 and I still go cold with the thought of that drive

You have more than enough experience for the job. The correct attitude is equally as important.
