Driving a fridge

the nodding donkey:
There is a hinged type of Mavis rail, which extends right next to the trailer, I’ll try to find a picture.

The supermarket…

Fleets have them on a slide out thingy.

Every one at our place has a Mavis rail so just go on the pin and couple up stood on the ground. Is it older trailers that don’t have them or other makes?

This…

In the same way that seat belts are mandatory, MAVIS rails or similar should be legal reqiurement.

Drivers shouldn’t be getting in between a close coupled unit and trailer in 2021.

Or any trailer??
Never having used them, I’ve gotta ask:
Are there any down sides to Mavis rails?

Been using them a few years now, can’t really think of any down sides to be honest.

No more climbing on the cat walk, simple to use & much safer

basically you connect the trailer then pull this out and connect everything from ground level

robroy:
Never mind split coupling, more importantly …How tf do you manage to sleep? :open_mouth:

Put it onto continuous. Its the stop start that wakes you up. BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP chugga chugga brmmmmmmmmmm BRMMMMMMMMMMMMBRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM silence.

Continous, no beep and it usually stays revving at the same rate instead of going balls out until it gets down to temperature.

Mazzer2:
The airline connectors point down at a 45 degree angle, there isn’t enough room to get on the catwalk so trying to push them from the ground or standing on the step with the air pressure is nigh on impossible just can’t get enough force behind it no problem with the idea of a Mavis rail but you still need a bit of room

Palm Couplings are the obvious solution to the force issue.

Drawbars were similar awkward placed couplings under the overhang.
So what did they do on ours. They replaced the easier to use and less affected by road dirt palms with poxy C’s.

Quick tip ,

Just before you pull the curtains, do a “defrost”, preferably before you park up
that way you wont disturb other drivers you’re next to
Nothing worse than a fridge deciding to do a fefrost midway during your 11 hours !!! :smiling_imp:

This one on a hire trailer is about as much use as ■■■■ on a fish.

Don’t split couple at Tesco , [zb] hell you’d think you’d commuted murder

Agree Doze. Had a right ruckus with one of their shunters once over this at Livingstone. Personally thought it was safer than getting immediately crushed, at least with split couplng I’d gain a few seconds . . .

Nope wouldn’t have it. When he’d calmed down said that a guy had been killed many years ago 'cos the safety valve wasn’t working. Park brake on but err wasnt.

Yeah they often can get jammed no doubt because the original íssue wasn’t reported or more likely fixed. A bit like gubbed internal straps on a curtainsider.

I never split couple. Mainly from my time at Tesco and Co-op. If your fairy strong you can connect the air lines without being right behind them just using arm strength and not pushing your body into it. Being skinny helps also.

The downside to a mavis rail is to pull them out you usually have a dog clip you have to remove.
Some drivers forget to check it is in before pulling off. So when they go to make a turn it starts poking out and could potentially clip something or some vehicle next to you.
That’s about it.

I couldn’t agree more. Palms should be compulsory on all trailers imo since they done away with the taps.

I’m sure that twist and push while bent over is going to do my back in someday soon.

Pulling the red button to split couple and drop is the only option imo also Bigtruck.

I’m surprised there aren’t retractable arms you can pull out (either on tractor or trailer) that stop the trailer rolling into the cab while connecting.

What about chocking the trailer? Would that offer sufficient protection or is the flex of the tyres/suspension too great vs. the gap for it to be effective? i.e. could still move/crush you?

If someone can’t correctly pull out a button to apply a trailer brake, can’t be arsed to do things correctly, then the “trouble and time” of getting a wheel chock in place will be waay beyond them!
What is needed ( sad but true) is more idiot proof systems that require no driver action at all.
