I’d agree with that.
A long distance run where you have 15 hours to do 8.5 hours driving.
Aka creamTo be fair 12 hour shift preferably less to call it a cream job.

ever heard of creative time sheeting?

I blame “No Overtime” and “drivers thinking it’s illegal to be on duty more than 10 hours at a time”.
Blimey I’d rather do an 11-12 hour shift on a distance bulk pallet run for the same,or even less, money as a 9 hour shift doing local multi drop or building deliveries.Which seemed to be confirmed by my time on agency work in which unfortunately I wasn’t the only one going by that logic.

Harry Monk:
There’s just no such thing as long distance UK work, at 847 miles you could drive from Land’s End to John O’ Groats in two shifts.
Trust me given the choice between nights out doing multi collection/drop general haulage within around 120 miles radius of base you’ll know the difference between that and ‘distance’ bulk pallet work.
I personally love distance work, the further the better, I hate round the door stuff and would sooner be away.
It’s casual work for me now so I prefer to max it out, make it worth while as I drive quite far for work that suits me to a tee. Not everybody’s liking but each to there own.
OVLOV JAY may be right, it’s about pay. Why tramp when I can make the same round the doors and be home every night.
A certain company in North Yorkshire pay their day men £1 more than trampers. They say it’s because they have to drive in each day.
Drift:
I prefer a bit of distance, see more and much less stress, I hate local work, driving around cities all day, no thanks
We have our own wagons and out a few nights a week often at short notice.
Most of us have our telly and microwave and the wagons are quite highly specified so well comfy.
But one guy has no telly no microwave or kindle (he may have an old sticky copy of razzle) and buys take away or butties to live off and his wagon (a bit minging) is just as bare as factory delivery.
Sod that, mine is full of everything, clothes, food the lot just in case.
Oh and beaver repellant
Are you sure you don’t work at my firm ? as we have a driver like that

Who in their right mind would want to do it now, living in a lay by, eating [zb] out of tins? .
That was one of my points.
The answer to that question is…‘Many’ (as there are)
They are either too timid to go slightly off route to find somewhere comfortable, in case they are asked ‘‘Why’’ by a planner type, while he is sat at home comfortable in his lounge, or in his local pub having a pint.
Too stupid to use a bit of initiative to make conditions better for themselves.
One of the ‘endurance crew’ I mentioned, …or a combination of all 3.

Oh no surely it must be better to drive up to Birmingham from Surrey do umpteen collections of steel for umpteen drops in London then have the guvnor moaning because you’ve booked off for the night before getting back to London.
I’m amazed drivers are telling the guvnors what they will/won’t do.

Probably the same guvnors who are moaning about a shortage of drivers. When the only shortage is decent work.
no doubt like most, ive worked with guys who would tell the boss what they would and wouldnt do in no uncertain terms.then when in mid flow, the mobiles rang and its the boss…then watch the same fannies asslick and crawl where nothing is too much trouble…anyone thats ever worked for me is either flexible and adaptable or working elsewhere in a very short period of time, and not just in haulage.if your an employer you want someone helpfull, your armchair viking jobsworth is best suited to tosco and their like.
rambo19:

Why? I tell my guvnor what I will and won’t do. For example, I won’t start before 0600, I won’t work after 1800, I won’t do nights out, I won’t work more than five days a week. What’s so strange about me saying any of that? My job is only one part of my life, and it has to fit around my life. My guvnor could always decline to employ me if he wasn’t prepared to accommodate that.

Same here. No week is alike, so at an interview it’s made clear that it might be a quiet week and home every night or it might be out 6-10 days. Someone else was talking about control over your own work and that really is the difference between being a steering wheel attendant and a good
working relationship. Some of our runs are complex, we have to tie on ferry times, get permits, lodge route plans over several countries, arrange stabling and book hotels; I can sort it myself but I may as well involve the driver and ask for their input, it hands back a bit of control and compensates for getting in a van and delivering a carton to Heathrow the following Monday.
My choice, but I write week nights off, if I am asked, I will do pretty much any job I am asked, if I am told, then the hackles are raised and a I asked “while I am doing this will you be having wine with you family at your evening meal?” I then wait for the silence and it usually ends in me being “asked”
