Driver was aware he struck a large object

I remember a news story on the A1 near Wittering i think, where an army coach loaded with cadets had a minor collision with a foreign hgv. Both drivers pulled up to exchange details, where another hgv struck the coach, killing a cadet. The coach driver was charged because he/she didnt stop in a safe place.
As said earlier, nobody is aware of full details so perhaps we should hold judgement.
We had an incident where a driver hit a women who jumped off a bridge at J14,which is Thames Valley police area.Northants Police were called to a car in lane 3 at J15A-16.On arrival they found a women driver,in lane 3 sitting glued to the steering wheel, hysterical. It had taken her that amount of time to realise what had happened and for shock to set it.
So I think no judgement should be bought on the Megabus driver until full facts are known.

What a stupid story out of nothing. No where does it say the driver knew he hit a body. Daily Record is good at fabricating non facts into stories…

Like the quote from a passenger, she could tell the difference between riding over a body and a fox. She’s got 1st had experience of riding over bodies has she? What about a sheep, a deer, some debret from a truck etc etc but no she could tell it was a body. What a load of bollox

There was a incident near me exactly the same but where a number of cars struck a body and didnt realise it.

Personally, I don’t think it’s an issue. The woman obviously wanted to die, and chose to achieve this by throwing herself beneath a large vehicle.

The coach driver didn’t ask to be involved in her scenario, and her problems were probably caused by her totally inconsiderate attitude towards others in the first place.

I feel for the woman’s family, and for the coach driver, but I feel nothing but contempt for her. She could have hanged herself in private.

Good riddance to her, it’s just Darwinism in action.

But as myself and a few others have now asked, is it a fact that the bus hit her down rather than her already being led in the road having jumped?

From the original post…

a woman who plunged from a motorway bridge.

Horror as Megabus driver runs over motorway plunge woman - then drives on for another 150 miles

A BUS drove on for 150 miles after running over a woman who plunged from a motorway bridge.

The Dundee to London service struck her on the M74 after leaving Glasgow - but the driver carried on until his first scheduled stop, at Preston.

A relief driver then took over and the bus carried on until it was ordered to go to a depot in Rugby, Warwickshire, where passengers were transferred to two other vehicles.

Police investigating the incident will try to establish whether the woman was lying dead in the road or whether she was merely injured when the coach ran over her.

One passsenger on the Megabus service last night described his horror at the inci-dent which happened at about 11.30pm on Saturday.

John Thompson, 45, said he was aware the bus had struck a large object - but was left stunned by an announcement on the final leg of his journey.

The musician said: "In a very matter-of-fact manner, the relief driver said 'sorry about the delay, ladies and gentlemen.

"'As you may have realised there was an incident just after you left Glasgow. A woman jumped off a bridge and your Megabus went over her.

"‘The bus did not stop or you would have been stuck at the side of the motorway all night’.

“I do not understand why the driver did not stop the bus straight away.”

The Stagecoach Group, who own the megabus.com brand, last night confirmed they had launched an investigation.

John yesterday spoke about the nightmare on board the coach, which left Buchanan Street bus station at 11pm on Saturday.

He had spent the weekend visiting his elderly parents in Glasgow and was returning home to Twickenham, London.

But half an hour into the journey the bus struck a 45-year-old woman who had jumped off a bridge over the M74, near the Blackwood junction in Lanarkshire.

John said: "That noise will live with me for the rest of my days.

"I could hear something rattling under my feet and a dragging sound.

"I was sitting next to an American woman and she said we must have hit a fox.

"But I said: ‘That’s not a fox. It’s a human being’.

“It was a modern double decker bus and it would have squashed a fox flat and you would never have known.”

Police confirmed the alarm was raised by a passing motorist - who it’s thought had spotted the woman lying in the road.

It appears the bus may have struck the woman just minutes later, as the timing of the motorist’s 999 call is extremely close to John’s recollection of feeling an impact.

But the megabus did not stop unt i l it reached Preston in Lancashireand John then noticed some unusual activity.

He said: "I saw four or five guys with yellow jackets shining torches under the bus.

"They also arranged for a smaller bus to face our bus and put its lights on full beam.

“There was a change of driver and five minutes later we were on our way. Nothing was said.”

It finally became clear something was wrong when the bus reached Birmingham, it s penultimate stop.

It is understood Stagecoach bosses ordered the vehicle to the nearest depot in Rugby 30 miles away.

When the double decker reached the depot the 70 passengers were transferred to two other buses.

A source said that the original driver of the bus contacted police from Preston, and they then ordered the bus to the depot.

The bus finally reached London’s Victoria Station at 8am yesterday.

Strathclyde Police last night confirmed investigations into the incident are ongoing.

A force spokeswoman said: "Around 10.35pm on Saturday police were called to a report of a 45-year-old woman who fell from a bridge on the M74 near junction 9 at Blackwell.

“There would appear to be no suspicious circumstances.”

A spokesman for Stagecoach said: “Our immediate thoughts are with the family of the person who has died. We are assisting police and have also launched our own investigation.”

More holes in this story than a collinder. So it’s the middle of the night for a start which = dark outside :bulb: . I think there is street lighting on that stretch of the M74 so you’d have a good chance of seeing something as large as a human body imho, but what if it was raining at the time. With the reflections and glare off the water it would make it a lot more difficult to see stuff on the road and there’s a good chance the first you’d know about it is when you hit it. I think the ‘it could have been a fox’ argument is fairly reasonable myself. However, I do get the impression that the driver knew he’d hit a human being from all the scrutiny that went on at Preston before carrying on on its way. If he thought it was perhaps an animal then I highly doubt much more would have taken place other than a quick walk round check by the driver.

As for the passenger’s comments - WTF does he know? First he claims to be facing the other way, but then claims to know the difference between hitting a fox and a human, neither of which he saw. WTF! Nuff said there I think!

If she jumped or fell 17 or 18 feet it is unlikely for her to have been on her feet. I think that Harry, although maybe a little harsh, has kinda summed it up well enough.
I don’t think I have ever met anyone who has the callousness to continue driving after running over somebody, and I find it impossible to imagine the bus driver knew what he had hit. Does anyone know if she had been hit already? From experience, a corpse looks surprisingly small when it is broken on the road. I reckon he didn’t know what he had hit, and carried on because he figured he would check the bus over when it reached it’s stop just to be sure.
In the accident I had I knew what I had hit straight away but the circumstances are never the same twice. First, I had slowed down a lot because of the vehicles on the shoulder, and second because I saw the shine of the crash helmet and stripes of the jacket. Even so, it happened so fast that, had I been at full speed, I may never have been fully aware of what I had hit.

Rob, how come you have mellowed so much as to be in any sort of agreement with me■■? :open_mouth:

If you ever read the story of the trial and execution of Ruth Ellis, you come to realise that when a woman is determined to die, then she is going to do it.

True enough, Harry.
