Driver Pecking Order?

Harry Monk:
I wouldn’t say there was a “pecking order” because different people look for different things in a job. One person might prefer to drive long distances, another might want to get home every day. I suppose though that if you did insist in thinking there was a pecking order, then a Formula 1 transporter driver would be towards the top of it.

Except most of the drivers of F1 transporters are driven by agency drivers who when the season is over will be working on other agency jobs.

Although I do know a few people who drive race transporters who think they are a bit above the rest or even the law. As I keep trying to explain to them once on the road it’s just another truck getting stuff from a to b and subject to the same laws as the rest.

I do look down on tipper drivers, who doesn’t? Mebbe if the ■■■■■■■ didn’t think they were auditioning for the HELLDRIVERS remake I’d think differently. :stuck_out_tongue:

Gimme van work ANY day of the week as long as it pays enough for all the above reasons! I was asked if I’d mind driving one of a firms vans a while back. The guy who asked me came across as though he thought I was going to explode as it was a common reaction from his regular drivers. I was out in the van in two shakes of a lambs’ tail!

Carryfast:
You’re right there is no comparison between the ‘skills’ of someone who ‘chooses’ to do multi drop zb compared to someone who ‘decides’ to do trunking instead. The first thing that shows is that trunk drivers have the ‘skill’ to know that multi drop is zb work. :smiling_imp:

And so Mr Know it all yet know surprisingly little attempts to derail yet another thread.

Not every tipper driver behaves like that. There are plenty of idiots (some on here) that think anyone who wont drive at 56 shouldn’t be on the road and they’re not tipper drivers. There are also those who would rather take a pay cut than drive a dirty wagon.

I remember two Scottish drivers arriving at Gilbraith’s yard for a back load one day.
The TM asked the older driver what he was driving and he said a four wheel Albion, the young driver said he had a 32 ton artic (max in those days) and puffed his chest out as though he was better then the old chap.
Our TM sent them round to the NORI brickyard for loads to Peterhead power station, hand ball on and off, 3500 for the old chap and 5500 for the youngster. He wasn’t smiling afterwards when his hands were red raw.

Russell.

Most people look up to a Hearse driver. :sunglasses:

I deffinitely feel like a lower class citizen because I drive a drawbar. I rarely get thanked for flashing in artic drivers

1/Tanker drivers :sunglasses:

2/Royal mail/gogzy :open_mouth:

100/Absolute low of the low, container drivers. :stuck_out_tongue:  :grimacing:

but I couldn’t care less because im quite well paid and my drawbar is a piece of ■■■■ to drive

If there is such thing as a pecking order its probrably defined by how fast or slow your wagon is. The ‘kings of the road’ are surely the ones with the higher limiter that look down on us slowcoaches by tailgating and then scraping the flies off your windscreen as they cut back in, knowing that you cant do zb all about it cos your slow

But more often than not, the slowcoaches are on more money…

Over the years I have done tramping on tankers, tippers and curtainsiders, now have a cushy night trunk with a fridge and earn more money than I ever did when tramping.

Yes, I think you’re right! I couldn’t think of the right term to use. Maybe I should’ve put, something like, which jobs require more skills and experience or something along those lines.

It’s not what or who you drive for, but how you drive as to where I will put you on the pecking list.
I’ve encountered more than a few plonkers on the road in my time who are driving in high prestige jobs…

I get very well paid for my ■■■■ local work thanks. Any idiot can drive up a motorway and in to a big yard. Some of the places I go you would be crying in two minutes. :smiling_imp:

In the world of passenger carrying vehicles it seems you start on bus work with something relatively small and work your way up to double deckers. Then you go up to coaches starting out with smaller and older vehicles doing school work, and gradually move up to doing tours in some of the most expensive vehicles on the road.

There is connection between pay and prestige. A London bus driver will earn far more than any British coach driver.

On the trains you start off on stopping suburban work and move up to express work which always pays better not to mention the prestige attached to it.

They look good driving along the road, but don’t they end up as skivvies at the venue?

Yes that’s right.once they’re set up…it’s out with the butler uniform
