Crikey that wound a few up D
Pah - No real trucker would use a map or satnav - Me I still use a sextant and compass. Can’t beat the stars and a bit if horizon in Central London. Always works for me!
I have a sat nav, but haven’t taken it to work for over a year. I know most of the drops and if any new ones crop up, like many others, I just use Google Maps and check out the access etc. on Streetview whilst i’m at it.
Only time I think i’d use a Sat Nav again would be if I found myself doing heavy multi-drop work again, where all the drops were new. Hopefully that’ll never happen.
To all newbie drivers… if you aspire to be like one of the old timers who know where everything is off the back of their hand, look at maps. Once you’ve got your head around the motorway network and major A-roads, your more or less there.
I remember talking to a driver some years ago who only trunked from A to B and back. He always used his satnav and admitted that he could not give directions because he never looks for landmarks. ASDA supply directions but they are proving to be unreliable so I now ask drivers and check google maps before I leave
The other day I was on containers and a driver refused to leave the depot because the postcode was wrong and he had no way of finding the place
The-Snowman:
Try doing home appliance multi drop to customers houses for the likes of Next or John Lewis. 30-40 drops per shift to residential addresses using just an a-z.
Yes it could be done. But a sat nav will take you right there instead of having to stop and check a map every few minutes. Ive done this type of work on 7.5T before and I always wondered how it would be possible without a sat nav.
Meh. Drivers and Screwdrivers. OS street map in left hand while doing gears and indicators, steer with the right hand, piece of ■■■■. No need to “stop and check a map every few mins”.

Bought a wee cheap £45 Binitone Sat Nav out of Argos 4yrs ago
Are they still in business?
I used to have a Binatone phone in the house about 30 years ago.
In fact I think I’ve still got it somewhere.

As a new driver, having the Sat nav is a god send, but I do want to get to a stage where I just know where to go like one of the lads in our yard. Anything new I ask him and 99.9999999% of the time he is spot on.Have you any interests that you can relate to that might help you? For example I like old historical and industrial stuff, so often I remember seeing old abandoned railway buildings, disused canals, roadside monuments etc. I might not remember a town or villages’ name, but an old disused factory etc I will recall.
Pubs are one I use . Sounds daft, but every town has a pub.

New-fangled “steering wheel attendant” nonsense!!
A real lorry driver navigates by checking which side of the trees have lichens growing on them .
Theres a Hungarian guy i know , delivers potatoes for a living, swears by his SatNav , (stupid [zb],piece of [zb] sat nav)
Depends on the work your doing ok if you been doing it for years fair enough only a map for the odd change.
If your multi dropping or always in a new area why not take advantage of modern tech and use a digital map.
Yesterday i had to go to bristol city center in the evening. It was the first time ive been there and the first time ive had to take an artic in a city. Personally it felt alot safer to have quick glances at a sat nav on the dash so i can keep checking for unlit cyclists an taxis diving up the inside. Than it would have been to keep turning on an interior light killing my night vision to try get a glymspe at a paper map or some scribbled down directions while trying to guess which lane to get in.

What’s a satnav?Never had one in a truck. Managed to get as far as Thessalonica, Greece once in a Land Rover without getting lost.
I did four years of the balkans, ukraine, turkey and georgia, more or less every country in europe and a few in asia before I bought my first satnav. can’t say I didn’t manage well with only maps but I’m pretty sure I could’ve avoided a few unnecessary weekends away when I arrived at the factory a few minutes too late etc. nowadays I use a garmin and google maps on the ipad
Work smarter - not harder !!
No Satnav, but Microsoft Autoroute on a lap top plus Google Earth as back up! Would like to stick to maps, but we deliver to farms throughout the UK and most addresses are just the farm name and a post code.
I have a Snooper DB8500… Its main use for me is the dab radio with the FM transmitter for planet rock!
Sometimes use the sat nav just to see how far and how much time is left. Handy after getting stuck somewhere.
Telly is handy during rest times and waiting to get loaded etc…
All in, its time manufacturers start putting dab radios in as standard!
I’m very nearly 50. The first truck I drove didn’t have power steering but the second did, and I was glad because it made my job a wee bit easier. Anything that makes the job easier is a welcome addition to me, so when I can stick a small screen thingy to my windscreen and it tells and shows me where to go I am pleased and don’t mind admitting it.
I do general haulage that can be 3 drops in the middle of [zb] nowhere in Scotland or, leave Manchester to drop in Leicester, Royston & then 3 in central London. My sat nav tells me if I can get to them in one day…or not. I can park up in leisure time, knowing full well I will not break the law.
How many of the posters on this thread started driving before mobile phones? I did, and of course I got the job done etc etc etc but I bet you all have mobiles now don’t you? If you look up Google maps on your phone or laptop while driving (oh no…a modern device!) or even refer to it whilst driving then you are breaking the law…it’s just an aid to our profession…get a [zb] grip!
Used satnav for years and never had a problem upto recently I wad copliot truck on i phone but as I’ve finally got rid of it in using aponia truck nav on windowsphone

Oh aye:
Opps maybe not

No. Google maps on my phone is perfectly adequate to find any places I don’t know.
same here, although i do a lot of farms and rural places so when it sends me down a single track road its usually right
I work nights and she often chats away all night to me, she can be a bit bossy at times tho
Yes. £36 EBay truck satnav. It’s no use when the post-code is wrong though and you haven’t been given phone numbers and can’t get them. Taxi drivers - especially in Grimsby last Friday evening - are a good source of info, bless 'em.
