Do you throttle back when being overtaken?

Depends on the time of day, what the traffic is like etc. I’ll hold my hands up and say I’ve miscalculated a couple of overtakes in the past, so I can’t call the over takers numpties or idiots like you guys seem to, I learnt the hard way that not everyone drops back.

That being said, when I’m being overtaken (stuck at 53 so it happens alot) I’ll back off to 50 if I can if it is obvious the guy is doing 53.5 or 54, not 56 or Europeans as they don’t need the help. Like I say I learnt the hard way and have realised more foresight is needed for something even as simple as overtaking. Such as tonight, I was coming up on an Argos wagon doing 50, in the mirrors I see 3 trucks about 500 yards back all gaining on me, so I dropped back to 50 behind Argos, let the other 3 overtake both of us, then went back up to 53 and went past when it was clear.

Another thing I’ve learnt, mainly from these boards, is when I get let out onto a Motorway or whatever, I hang back at 50 untill whoever let me out has got past. I have found that whilst this is probably appreciated by the guys I’m letting back in, it tends to ■■■■ off those joining behind you who can’t wait those extra 30 seconds before taking it to the limiter.

Essexboy:
In what way do they cause accidents ?

They cause congestion, they interrupt good traffic flows and they cause safe distances
between other trucks in the locality to be reduced.

They should carry a flashing amber light.

I knew you couldn’t resist - That’s what forums are for.

We all need to mass debate.

well tbh im sick to death of idiotic drivers who do not know the size of there vehicles, numerous times in last few days ive had to pull back quick to evade idiots who pull in far too close!! thats why accidents happen idiots!! but its prob the newbies as most experience drivers you get a flash in, but its slowly going, and now it will be changed by bits of truck on motorway!! and also dont expect to just pull out onto motorway from slip if i cant pull over, and later up road cut my nose of ■■■!!!
but if you back off the guy behind you is on your bumper, you let the guy in front in and then the next one is coming and you cant resume as no room, so if everybody runs at same limiter speed the better it will be, but a lot of limiters are well over!
i agree with a previous poster about M6 at 3am ish, its barmy!!! and on M1 this morning at about 5am.

ok rant over!!!

Easy there fella…i’m there then…think i’m one of the few who sits at 52mph between j8-6!! Theres some scary ■■■■ there some nights and my money is on something nasty happening soon!

Essexboy:
Beware of our new 3663 scanias they are all restricted to 49mph and de tuned for optimum fuel efficiency and to help save the planet

Unless you’re sucking out portaloos with a leaky tanker pipe - No.

It’s just all about not driving like a knob basically.

Sorry I didn’t mean to offend, not many actually do correct speed, and yep something is gonna happen soon and I don’t want to be one involved, makes me wonder if those cameras work, and it’s not only bigger vehicles gonna be involved either. I get passed all time! Feel like I’m standing still sometimes! It’s scary!!

All we have to do is deliver or collect the goods and get home safely.

It’s too late if we cause death by dangerous driving.

If I’m in the Volvo, I’ll back off and let them pass, but nothing passes the Merc’s, they show 58 on the sat nav, they also don’t need anyone to back off for them as they usually have a good 3 - 5mph advantage which sees them passing other trucks in a matter of seconds.
The Volvo shows 55, so if anything starts passing, I’ll drop back to 53 to let them pass then pick it back up.

Some idiot on the A5 the other day decided it’d be funny to block both lanes with his truck, 2 lanes into 1, I could see the traffic in the single lane moving, so rather than stopping, I moved to the outside lane and slowed down a little to ‘blend in’ where they meet, about 300 yrds before it closes to 1 lane, a ‘truck’ (small, possibly 7.5t but I think a class 2) pulls out into the outside lane and I have to slam on anchors.

Anyway, he’s quicker than me from the line, but on the big new stretch of A5, I catch him nicely (in the Merc) and that’s when I know the exact length of my truck :smiling_imp:

I always try to, but if I’m climbing a hill loaded… :unamused:

…If he’s got another Driver trapped alongside him in Lane 2,
The Professional Driver will YIELD when it is safe to do so.

A longer transit time or losing momentum are nothing compared with your safety.
Death or a lifetime in a wheelchair are always around the corner.

I don’t go over 50mph on dcs and mways so I don’t need to knock back. I let our other tippers get there first so they have to find someone, or if it’s a turnaround job then me being at the back I simply wont have time to go back for one more load, but those infront will.

very rare i get a heavy load so most times i can stick at limiter on up hill it does 56 so doest happen often, if im on a straight il let them passed but if theres a steepish hill upfront i hold out a little see if they hold there speed up hill then either pull away as they drop off under weight and let them passed next time or if still passing slowly on uphill il knock it off and let them on there way

As I’m not on CC it’s my foot that does the control, usually once a truck pulls out I’ll come off the gas until they are clear enough to pass, then back on as the aero off the trailer gives me a handy pull along.

Get behind an Irish truck and I set records for between junctions

I’m a big fan of Cruise Control (CC).

It free’s up my feet to dance around the footwell.

This helps me avoid the deadly Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).
