Discs or drums?

I think Paul (Repton) Might tell you different, the lad who He mentioned changing his trailers every 3 years, does some of the horriblest work you can imagine. Corrosive, quuarries, serious hills all at 44t obviously, and as he says. 3 years without a penny spent.

I wouldn’t doubt it for a minute, but that’s probably why he gets shut after 3 years, Lord help the poor sod who gets them next!! Even Bulmans keep their trailers longer than 3 years!!

We run all Freuhauf bulkers & the newest is a 2006, we have had a few over the years with ROR discs & they have nearly broken us, (3 trailers cost £18k in brake repairs in just over a year) we now have 1 with SAF discs which doesn’t seem too bad, we needed another trailer at short notice & couldn’t find anything over 65yds with drums at that time.

Ross.

PS, The repairs were in 2002 when the disc’s & calipers were MUCH more expensive!!

If they’re the early ones I’m not surprised.
All I am saying is there has been a lot of improvement in the last 6 or 7 years, and the ones that Paul and I are talking about are the Merc ones although they have all improved IMO.

Ran my 2004 Kel-Berg tipper on quarry work for nearly four years with SAF disc’s and through wheel wash 8-10 times/day and dusty as hell some days.wading through “quarry sludge” too.
NEVER any bother at all :sunglasses: with the discs compared to the boys with drums, relining/skimming every few months :exclamation: :exclamation: :unamused:

Full set of pads on 3-axles could be changed in less than an hour :exclamation: :exclamation:

The one trailer we have on discs is a 2005 running SAF and so far it’s also been very good, that said, it’s on general UK long distance bulk feed & grain work so only going into quarries for the odd back load.
