Diary. Canada to the USA (again) Pic heavy!

chilistrucker:
nice :grimacing:
just showed the mrs this diary, she likes the look of it out there :grimacing:
that was some hole in the ground. alot of the roads on that diary, really reminded me of some of the open stretches in spain.
i’ve noticed a trend with the pickfords removal wagons, alot of them seem to have the really, really big living spaces. owner drivers?
never ceases to amaze me, on a good day the distance you lot can cover out there. is there a max period of driving your allowed to do before your supposed to stop and log a break?
truckstops. guess the same as uk and europe, some good, some bad. as a rule, do you pay to park?

My last two diaries have admittedely being of very good trips, they’re by no means all like that.

In the US we can do a 14hr spread over and 11 hours driving. In Canada its also a 14hr spread over but with 13 hours driving, the difference is that in Canada you can extend up to a 16hr spread over by logging off duty time during your shift in 30 minute blocks or more to a total of two hours and then have 8 hours off that night instead of 10 if you so wish. We dont have any requirements (yet, changes next year in the US) to log any breaks during the day, we stop when we feel like it, for as long as little as we want. Theoretically it is possible to start driving and not stop for 13 hours straight in Canada, not that you would do that. You just do things to suit yourself to get the job done in your own way.

Truckstops here are beyond any comparison to anything found in the UK. There are several large chains that have similar layed out truckstops across the length and breadth of the country and then there are endless amounts of smaller ones, often on back roads. Paying to park is almost unheared of here, there are a handfull of truckstops that do charge but anything purchased in the truckstop up until the entire amount of the parking is deducted so if you’re clever you dont pay a penny anyway, also if they do charge, you get it free for 24 hours for every 50 gallons of diesel you buy. As my tanks on my truck hold 280 gallons (1060litres) there is no need to pay. Also all of these chains give you a free shower with 50 or more gallons of diesel and you have rewards cards and can bank them on there for use at a later date. The showers are above and beyond anything in the UK, all large spacious private rooms which 99% of the time have a toilet too. The Pilots/Flying J’s are ripping out their old showers and modernising them all and they are of a higher quality than many hotel rooms. Also towels are provided and await you as you enter your shower room. Needless to say the showers are cleaned after each and every use and clean fresh towels put back etc.

Glad you enjoyed! I’ll be doing more in the future.

Great effort there ,and your photos were excellent ,looking forward to the next one . Tnx

cheers

Great diary, a cracking read enjoyed it.

I’ve actually been to that copper mine outside SLC, its absolutely vast and an interesting place to visit. Those little dots at the bottom of the hole are trucks bigger than my house!

All these American diaraies of late has made me want to do a US road trip.

Hiya . for you who’ve not been to Canada, as you arrive at a place to eat ( little chef or simular type of place) it states
that cars are also welcome… none of this NO HGV rubbish, everyone’s welcome anywhere… as you can see ia’m back for
another look.

Flaming hell just imagine having that luxury at a MSA or truckstop here :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

fab pics and diary, Wyoming was amazing when i passed through it. pop; 450000, some great scenery too.Keep it up.

Hi all.Robin Hood.We have a copper mine like the one you visited up here in Lappland called Aitik.I done a bit of part time driving with them in the summer driving the gigantic dumpers. It’s a bit different to underground :open_mouth:.Loading about 200t in one go is a bit special.
The strangest thing is that you don’t need an HGV licence to drive them :open_mouth:,they give you ‘‘in house’’ training and off you go.
They have a lot of ‘‘baby’’ dump trucks which load about 60-80t,more than half are driven by girls\women  Mike

Excellent Pics.
I like the way you just hire a car or get a bus and go off to do your own thing.
brilliant!

In the US car hire is often dirt cheap. I always load up with the most insurance coverage possible and even then its often no more than £30-40 per day with unlimited milleage. If you end up staying longer and want to extend the car hire you just call them and its sorted straight away, if you end up staying for less time than you’ve booked the car for, you just return the car and only pay for the time you’ve used. Can you imagine that in the UK? I return to England every year for Christmas and try and get a one way hire car from Heathrow up to Humeberside Airport which is near to my parents house. In January its £92 one way but in December the robbing scoundrels want over £250 for exactly the same thing! Needless to say my parents are coming down to Heathrow to collect us instead.

There are two things that are always a huge shock to get used to if I do some driving back in the UK. One is the digital tacho/driving hours and the other is the lack of facilities, especialy showers.

Its hard to get photos from inside such cramped confines but these are some from the Pilot truckstop in Port Huron, Michigan just over the border from Canada. Its a brand new place, only open about three months now and I call in there pretty much every time I cross on that border.

I had no idea the place was there until I arrived in the truckstop and goggled things to do in Salt Lake City. The tour company said on their website that they collected people from certain hotels within the city so I managed to get them to come to the truckstop, they were reluctant at first but caved in eventually!

Thats right. Unless its an urbanised built up area, most places have truck parking and in more rural places and in much of Canada, more locals eat in truckstops than truckers. Because of that there is often an area of a large table etc reserved just for truckers at which mere car driving locals are not allowed to sit at!

For me, Wyoming is always the start of the nice bit where you feel like you’re in the American west. Those big rock formations and open horizons are like something out of a western film and coming from England and only ever seeing that sort of thing on tv, its always a bit special to see.

I cant remember how much profit they said they made per day in that mine but it was insane, probably more than some countries do in a month. It was certainly worth seeing. Another staggering sight was over the once huge canyon that is now almost filled in to the top with the spoil from the mine.
