It is the only job that you can be jailed for.
Drivers are not jailed for driving, they’re jailed for driving dangerously and killing people.
Parking issues
I’ve never had this problem. If I know I’m not going to make my next drop I’ll stop way before 4.5 hours driving. Running to the wire on your driving hours is what makes the parking situation more stressful.
Congestion.Road closures.
Paid by the hour, bring it on. Road closures also enhances my knowledge of surrounding areas near the closure too so it’s all good.
Dcpc
Time and half on Saturdays, bring it on.
DVSA or the police.
I don’t break the law, not bothered by them.
Load security
Drive boxes so not a problem. Drove scaffold wagons before though, load security is just part of the job. Don’t see the stress in it.
Traffic Commisioners.
See DVSA and police.
Lack of respect from other road users.
Water off a duck’s back. They don’t understand and never will. Accept and move on.
The general public that think trucks are a nuissance.
Good. The more morons I annoy the better.
When flipping burgers can earn you more.
If McDonald’s operatives earn more per hour than you then you really must have a duff job and you should seek other employment.
The balance of home life and family time.
I’ll give you that one.
What works for me is gazing up at the sky when things are getting “fraught”. (Obviously this only works in daylight with a cloudy sky
) No matter how many shunts it takes, no matter how many people have to wait for half a minute, no matter what, the world still keeps turning. It doesn’t revolve around me, it never has and never will.
I lost my Dad almost exactly two years ago to the day, then spent the following four months watching cancer take my Mum from me. During all this, my big Bro was diagnosed with prostate cancer, a few weeks ago my OH lost her Dad to lung cancer, and I’ve just learnt that the guy who owns my local builder’s merchants, one of the nicest, most helpful men I’ve had the pleasure of meeting, has stage 3 colon cancer. I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago so in all probability I’ve got less in front of me than behind. As I said, no matter what, the world is still turning. I enjoy my job and my life a lot but I realise that this is it. It isn’t a dress rehearsal. Like a lot of folk, I’ve suffered depression, but at this stage in my life, I refuse to give it houseroom.
Apologies for a somewhat disjointed ramble
Smile, look for the good things in life, and be kind to yourself.
Never suffered with depression or stress myself, I just do my best and if that’s not good enough for somebody in a office then it’s tough ■■■■■.
As for doing early mornings, thats the best time of day, clear road ahead watching the sun rise
Many drivers refuse to drive in London.
If they are sent there, they will throw their toys out of the pram.
London has never bothered me.
I keep a good distance from traffic and let them get all flustered and annoyed tooting their horns all day.
It is a unique city.
A melting pot of race, religion and colours.
They all seem to get on.
Just take a 45 min break before going in.
My idea was always be at your first drop on time even if it means a bit earlier start then after that if the day goes down hill you can always state you were on time first drop they can’t come up with ,if you had been on time first drop you would have stayed on time plus if I was held up accidents / roadworks etc I would phone the office and tell them I was going to be late not my fault guv put the pressure back on them you can feel the pressure coming off you always worked for me ,never not tell them and drive like a lune to make the time up if anything happens your the main man get some KALMS from the chemist they really work only herbaL after a week on them you don’t care a toss
In my personal experience, the moment when you realise that you can’t do everything, and prioritise what must be done, (not easy I know) is when you stress levels start to go down.
As General Patton said
“If a man does his best, what else is there…?”
You have to consciously stop the job getting to you. If someone is giving you grief, so what? They can get as worked up as they like, its only words. No need to get stressed over someone elses issues. Its just part of the job and you should remain polite until they push you to your limits. We all have them! Go out, do your job and go to bed at the end of the shift. Any day with no incidents is a good day and its keeping the debt collectors away
