My mate helped to do this whilst defuelling a V.C. 10
Apperently the rear tip tanks fuel guage was u/s and no one realised so the defuelled the front tanks.
The ground crew (including a visiting air cadet IIRC) got a bit of a shock when the nose lifted
Gents my second favorite when it goes wrong RAF pictures
Good pics them! Flew back from Bosnia on a VC10, only 10 of us on the flight!
We have an air show every year at Rhyl where I live, the Lancaster is always there doing low level run along the beach. Impressive stuff!

I can’t wait to see your favourite one .
Somebody probably had a quite word in the tanker drivers ear as it doesn’t look as though he has put on the static discharge strap .
Local news reported a sonic boom heard around Oxon area late yesterday afternoon; Someone aith a scanner reckons there was a lot of activity with US and Raf jets out around the Cotswolds. I saw the new Airtanker fly over so perhaps it was to do with this?
The sonic booms were two QRA (fully armed) Typhoons scrambled from Conningsby to intercept a helicopter over Bath that was transmitting on the emergency frequency. The Typhoons were given permission to go supersonic. Probably be a lot more of this during that overpriced sports day coming up this summer.
‘Soldier z’ the pics of the VC10 your mate was involved with, would that be the Cpl in charge at the time, Scottish bloke, initials CH now working for Virgin?
We’re doing alot of work on the new Hercules hanger, where you have to be escorted over the runway. You can do an eyesight test and safety brief to get an airside pass to go over on your own, but our TM wont allow it on insurance grounds. Would this really bump up a firms’ premium as it’s still a delivery off the public highway?
Anyone who visits RAF Brize more than (I believe 20times) has to fill in about 3 forms to obtain a “green pass” instead of the usual red one that is displayed in the windscreen. If you dont, you can be refused entry as a couple of subbies have been this week working for us. The green pass allows you to drive unescorted around the base without ■■■■■■ provided you are not going “air-side” (unless of course you have a runway permit). It does seem a bit of bs but it does prove it’s worth as I’ve had nearly a weeks’ worth of work on the base because many of our drivers have not bothered to fill the forms in. The catch, as I understand it, is that you or your employer have to pay for a CRB check (my employer paid for mine)
are these the pass’s that ONLY stobart are allowed have, if they are they want them back…
back on topic,
and how much have these subbies lost money wise, because they choose not to fill in 3 forms, surely if an employed driver can be arsed to fill in these forms, a subbie would be wise enough to fill the forms in , and i bet the MOD work is more profitable, if i was the company, i’d be very reluctunt to use these subbies again
and i bet these are the ones, (as you have said before) which drive the blinged out scanny dressed for a 6mth tour of being an ice road trucker , and not the ones where the truck is a tool to do the job.
the crb check, if they are OD’s they shouln’t have to worry about a crb, as you have to be of good reput to hold a O-licence, don’t you?
Our firm just gave them other work Once the lime spreading and Banbury flood defense contract’s finished, I bet they’ll be keen to get on to Brize to throw off the likes of me who’ve been glad of anything aslong as I get paid and it’s easy work…
No photos allowed on the base mate, those MP`s with snow drop hats will give you some porridge in the cells.
Did you see the VC10 fleet, they pay thousands of pounds in fines when they land abroad, too noisy and non complient with the latest regs, they have the air to air tanker refueling squadron at Brize, public are allowed to fly with them to watch them refuel in the air.
Tristar fleet,ex TWA and PanAm,very old,and always breaking down in exotic places, and wait for parts, but in a dump of a place, they get fixed fast.
Civillian airliners,747,and Airbus can be seen, for the troop carrying.
The Boeing C17,bit of a beast, multi puropose. You are allowed to eat in the canteen, buy a reduced priced ticket at the main gate house, after you have cleared security.
The vc10 looks past it’s sell by date now, fading paintwork etc but still impressive to watch takeoff. Theres a fleet of support wagons there that never seem to move.

Very true how did you know that? Worked on them for over ten years, if it couldn’t be fixed fast fault was carried.(only in [zb] holes of course) they should have scrapped the VC10 fleet years ago and bought more TriStars, it costs the taxpayer millions each year to keep the VC10’s flying.
Ascension Islands was a fave place to “breakdown”,half way to the Falklands, turtle spotting and scuba diving waiting for the spare parts, lol.
The VC 10,passenger seat configuration is backwards facing, more chance to survive the crash with your back facing the other way,in the civy world of aviation,at one point,im sure they may have suggested that air passengers on the holiday jets should sit the other way.
Tristars are knackered, they have ordered a replacement work horse,Airbus order.
As a member of public,at a price, they can fly you to the Ascension or the Falkland islands, they take out film and tv crews, among one was the documentary called Extreme Fishing, with Robson Greene.
I flew to the Falklands on a “timmy” tristar in 94. Killer of a flight! Went on a jolly in a hercules to watch the air to air refuelling which was good and they let me take the controls for a bit on the way back as well

As a slight derail. I used to deliver to many of the Lincolnshire air bases. Waddington, Cranwell and Scampton being the most difficult to access, but because I went every day I was given an Access All Areas pass, they even let me park near the runway for lunch to watch the Vulcans training. I love RAF bases and Water
I’ve been parked beside the runway at Brize when the Vulcan was based there briefly after it’s restoration; shook the lorry like mad when she took off Those Antonovs are impressive to watch too, especially when you’ve seen how much they’ve been loaded with
Flew outa brize last week, saw the tristars(huge) and the VC10s,the C17s & the Herc fleet. Might give them a bell when i get back, see if i can get on one of those re-fueling runs
