Defying physics again

I think you need a different job this driving lark aint really for you is it !!!

Blokes just asking for some advice and people shooting him down saying he can’t hack it. Everyone has to learn ffs. Some reet knobs on ere

I used to lean out years ago and saw many others doing it too however you just don’t seem to see it now. Maybe because mirrors are so much better I don’t know.
Coops would love to give you a couple of hours tuition. You would either improve or do my head in or probably both. I had literally hundreds of guys and gals who really struggled
reversing. Don’t beat yourself up about it and don’t over think it as someone else said. It sounds like that’s what you are doing. Just take your time with each reverse and if you think you may be too close to something get out and check. Ignore anyone watching or giving comments. You will improve 100%. You may never be a natural but there are plenty like that.
Get in as much practice as you can especially with the things you struggle with. Easier said than done sometimes but take every opportunity you can.

I think it’s crap how little reversing you get on training these days and the fact that some only show the reversing manoeuver for the test. Training time is cut to an absolute minimum especially when someone struggles.
In the good old days we had plenty time to give a little more help. All this doing by number of turns on the wheel till you get to a certain point is a waste of space. Mind you the ones that use that method are usually crap themselves,

I can see the health and safety issue there. If some one fell out…

seat belt can be worn, however i haven’t fallen out yet despite rarely bothering

Well must admit I tried it tonight in P&O. I did wear my seat belt though for the first time lol

Ignore all the knobs on here saying hang your keys up.

You will get there eventually or maybe like 50% of drivers you won’t but you will at least get to the point where you really don’t care about it, or care what anybody thinks.
The main thing is just to not damage stuff, if it takes you 3 shunts well so what…
I know drivers that have been driving 10 years & still always need a shunt…

Mate I’ve been driving since God was a boy and I’ll often put a shunt in. There’s no shame in it when compared to the shame of ripping mudguards off and damaging surrounding paraphernalia. Anyone who judges or criticises ain’t worth listening to.

Cooper1203,

You will see drivers sticking their heads out of the window watching the back of the trailer / wheels. This is what I do until I am almost in the bay and then the last bit with mirrors.

You will get there, it does take 6 months to a year, but I think it will click once you piece it together.

Didn’t someone on here say they opened the door and leaned out? Or witness it? Something like that lolol

I’m one who opens the door and leans out, not only do i find it more comfortable for the neck (i am ancient mind :smiling_imp: ) you get a better view and feeling for what’s going on.
It also has a safety aspect that should not be ignored, any sounds from the back will be reflected better from the door itself, if something were to happen or someone shout from the back end you are more likely to hear it and see it due to angle of view.

The only premises anyone has complained about this practice in well over 40 years was comet at Skem, some pen pusher got the arse saying it was dangerous, he couldn’t quite see the link between the number of deckers they ran with smashed in arse ends due to they’d all been rammed back repeatedly into the loading deck because people couldn’t judge when far enough back…leaning out the door gives that extra distance judgement too.

Its not a practice for everyone but works for some.

Except don’t try doing that in a Volvo or Renault at least with electric parking brakes as it will apply the parking brake automatically. Just in case anyone in such vehicles thinks I’ll give that a try.

^^^ in a Scanny with EPB if you hold the epb switch down for a few seconds it will override the auto application of the brake, whether that works on the ovlov or reno i dunno.

You can add Mercedes to that list.
