Dedicated or crazy?

again he should’ve factored that in before taking the assignment

I assume that he did do, worked out how long he was required for and then decided that it was OK.
If the employer then changes his mind…
Unless we know WHY he didn’t want to do the longer shift its a bit unfair to assume he is just lazy or awkward.

Certainly not crazy and don’t really need to be dedicated; just a decent work ethic really. Nothing wrong with helping someone out under those circumstances as long as he doesn’t start taking the yellow stuff.

Good onya.

Totally agree - just make sure you don’t become a ‘victim’ of your own success. You’ll only really find out what they think of you when you can’t oblige!

This ^. Everyone is nice and pally and “you’re our best driver” etc when it’s going in their favour, but trying standing your ground when you get an unreasonable request or some other kind of ■■■■ take, then you’ll see just how much mutual “respect” there really is between you. In my experience that’s when you find out people’s true colours and you soon discover those people who you thought were decent are in fact utter [zb]s. Always be on your guard and don’t get complacent when things are going well.

That just about sums it up, you’re the good guy when everything is going well, but as soon as there is a problem then you are the bad guy, whether it’s your fault or not.

Do your best but don’t think that it is a two-way thing, they only keep you sweet for their own benefit, not yours.

I have refused a run before. Shift got cancelled then called in a few hours later. When i started i had been up for 7 hours and they gave me a 14 hour trunk. I refused and explained why and they understood. I sat for 7 hours then did a 4 hour trip.

it is give and take. They run strictly legal and there are a few of us who are trusted and respected but we have worked for it. Trunking is a cushy job but i have done shop deliveries and still do occasionally. They don’t like new faces showing up and trying to make demands which i can understand

Id help as much as i can within reasson but it is us and them as far as im concerned.there is no respect the the work place now imho.ive witnessed a man whos is a grafter with 30 years under his belt being treated like dog ■■■ for no fault of his own.

Some lads just don’t want work.
At my last job the md often phoned me up to ask me for a lift at weekends as I lived in his rd.
Often to find out I was in dover on an emergancy job, or in lorette del mar waiting to double man to dover.
If I was legal my tm used to ask me if I could work and as I got paid door to door on call out work or sudden changes it was worth it.

The other drivers moaned but would turn down changes at short notice.
Then again I got paid more per hour. And had a works car if I wanted it.
The bird lived 60 miles away. Never used my car to go visit her for 9 months!

My agency used to do that with me. I took Scanny’s approach to agency work. I did stand my ground on a regular basis when I didn’t want to work or want to work for a particular client taking it to the point where I once told them that I wasn’t available for a job as I had something important on and whilst I gave 110% when at work as far as I was concerned it came after wiping my arse in the order of importance in my life. Still got plenty of work after that phone call.

Good customers/employers are worth bending over backwards for. But make sure this tallies up in your bank account also.

Otherwise don’t be too nice and be walked over. It can become a habit that is taken advantage of.

I guess it is situational as and when it is worth bending over backwards.

In this instance I’d say it was perfect timing for you. And one person’s loss is another’s gain.

Totally agree…you’re only as good as your last overtime/favour you’ve done them. Mess up or upset someone and they’ll drop you like a brick!!

I am well aware that i would get dropped just like anyone else if i did something seriously wrong. I do make sure my truck and load are correct though and that’s why i tend to get the inter depot transfers instead of the empty trailer. There have been too many times when the empty trailer isn’t empty. I will not take a trailer out until i am satisfied that anything that is on it should be on it
things may change soon though. The girl from the agency gives me the same shifts every week and changes only happen after i agree or its on the spot after i turn up for a shift. She is going on maternity leave soon though and i have no faith in the rest of them. She was off for the weekend and i phoned the office 4 times. I still haven’t had my calls returned and that may be a good indication of how bad it will go in her absence.

i know all good things come to an end sometime so i am enjoying it while I can.

Get your start time for the next day as you’re leaving after your shift.

It’s in these situations when you remember what a good idea it was to give the planner a spare cig or two when you met in the smoking hut, or to wish him and his family “a very good Christmas” with a bottle of scotch or wine at that time of year (obviously you’d need to be on decent speaking terms prior to this or you’d end up looking like a [zb]!). “A bottle of scotch?!” you may scoff, but such tactics can easily double your yearly earnings if your current workload with that client is a bit hit and miss.

Your a decent man for doing it but often kindness is mistaken for weakness and theyl probably expect you to put your back out one day when your not well or something so you cant and theyl punish you for it, same at my warehouse i did a load of morning and weekend overtime as im one of the most experienced FLT drivers, i asked for a 4 day weekend the rang me up asking me to go in on my day off i said no, now i rarely get offered overtime and they make it difficult for me to take holidays.

timmo:
Surely the whole point of being a driver is that you take deliveries to places. It doesn’t matter whether you like that place or not, that’s where it needs to be. If we got to choose, there’d be a shedload of trucks parked along every sea-front and all the drivers would be in the nearest Wetherspoons!

And what’s wrong with that?

One main advantage of not being employed by a company is the option to leave for a while when you feel like you are being taken for granted. This is something i have done several times over the years. To be honest, these little jobs do work in my favour in other ways. Going to Cairnryan or Warrington does get very monotonous so the change is nice for me too. I cant say it is all selfless deeds when i do get something out of it too. Money isn’t everything and i never wanted trunking long term because i would easily get bored. I am too much of a grafter
