Speaking as someone who regularly takes out our demo vehicles ( and an ex tipper man ) i would probebly ‘just’ go for the MAN…Unlike Jonmea i found the P cab Scania very uncomfortable and by the end of the week i was glad to see the back of it. The MAN however was very very nice to drive but spoiled by the auto box and the steering wheel which was a tad too big. The MAN was better on fuel too if i remember rightly. I agree with moose about the longevity though, the Scania will almost certainly last longer…having said that, if i was an owner driver looking to buy an artic tipper on local work i’d probebly go for a DAF CF with the small wheels on the lift axle and a day cab. Im suprised Smiths did’nt go for a DAF actually. Its just a shame that Smiths could’nt replace the old Foden with a …Foden.

Smiths have recently bought 2x CF units with mid lifts; A 59 reg with manual 'box and a 61 reg auto. They’ve not been that pleased with them. We used to be an all Foden fleet but since they were finished, we’ve had MANs (no bad comments except the heavy tare weight) a sole Volvo FM (don’t know why they didn’t buy more), Volvo FEs (lovely to drive but utter crap in terms of reliability) and Daf CFs. Our TM loves Scanias and has been pushing for them for a few years, but senior management didn’t see them as worthy of their price tag, until now it seems. Dad’s even toyed with the idea of asking to have the manual CF instead, but the driver of this originally had the auto and was removed from it (better not say why).
I’m not ashamed to admit to admit I liked the Axor I tried
Why do you want or need a sleeper for day work, i liked having a day cab because i knew i was coming home end of. Ive done day work with a sleeper and got stuck out once with no gear! But it was fine because i had a bed

Some drivers need the space for their ego

So that might be why day cabs have frilly curtains?
I feel as though I wasted money on ADR tankers to find out on job hunting that major hauliers ie hoyer, wincanton etc were replacing their sleeper units with day cabs, definitely don’t feel comfortable driving a slow day cab tanker. Dhl on Morrison & tdg/nd tesco have some sleeper ones but don’t know what they’ll be replaced with…
I’m selling my ADR now if anyone is interested…
Just been told, the Scania is a P cab 420 and the MAN a 440. It looks likely Dad will be getting the MAN as Cordwallis have a depot near our quarry.
A lucky escape by the sound of it.
Scania day cabs are not too bad, as long as they are not the short cab version. The short cabs do not allow the seat back to recline at all and are unbearable. The slightly bigger version has about 8" behind the drivers where you can stuff a coat, bag or some jumps leads and still be able to wind the seat back a bit.

He won’t think so when he’s trying to coax that MAN into doing a bit of graft.

No complaints about our MAN 8wheelers so far. Dealer service has been great too apparently.

Ps-proper drivers don’t need back windows to maneuver…lolGood retort…
, i see these proper drivers perform regularly, going way past the ideal manoeuver point, which happened to be an easy slight blinder, only to do their best to pull the tyres from the rims doing a jack knife U turn so they can come back and go in the only way they know how, on their own side, its really quite sad to watch,
They’ll be the same ones that can’t park normally at the MSA and have to create their own drive in drive out space, usually tell who’s going to do it if you can’t see anyone at the wheel, 50% of the side windows will be covered by camp tasselled curtains, and all you can see of the steering wheel attendant is a bangled limp wrist posing on the steering wheel as they arrive…
That image is so familiar
Often spotted as well coming back up your inside when you’re passing in the middle lane of the motorway after they’ve knocked it into neutral on a downhill because they can’t bear anyone to overtake them.

as above & you’d want the G version at least . the P is an awfull cab & dont go for a 3 pedal opticruse go for the 2 pedal version , you’ll love the auto when you get used to it , but you’ll soon cuss when yer in traffic & still find you have to use a clutch pedal you’d just as well have gone for a manual
I can’t see why they’ve gone for a 420 with all the emissions nonsense and auto 'box surely it needed at least a 480? 10bhp/t and all that…

That sounds a little under powered when 8 wheelers have 400. Hope I don’t get stuck behind him .

You’ll see it between Gill Mill and Banbury…Creeping up the hill towards Deddington!
Dad tried a 440 about 2 years ago and said it was gutless. Clearly the drivers’ opinions don’t count.
Hi Nathan , bet he would stay on the Foden if he could ?, has he asked to keep the foden ? , does it cost money to run ? , if they knew he wanted to nurse it they may keep it .

He would but they want rid. The trailer’s had it. The 52 plate is worse so perhaps they should do a cut and shut job?
One of the biggest problems we found with our 4 serries Scania’s was the engine hump really shrinks the leg room on the Rh drive vechs ! , always had to get the “trigger” switch turned around as it always would rub against leg ad switch from High -low an VV
Wasn’t there some problem with Scanias about 10 years ago re driver back pain? It concerned the supermarket drivers mainly, I seem to recall?
