Davies Int. Southampton. With photos (Part 1)

Hey! For a time that was when my bank account was permanently in the black with Mr.Viner in charge. It wasn’t a very long time but a nice feeling. He would also troll off to Woolwich lunchtime and get himself some lunch and pay my last cheque in my bank ( as opposed to his did I hear you say?). Things turned sour when the “Boy” came along and he no longer had total control. I did like him tho’…“Ole rotten teef!”

Hey Gazzer " the boy " as you called him AKA David is still there, now divorced from his wife ( the old man never liked her and made sure any part of the company would only be passed on to Davids kids, so that naffed her plans up ) a bigger fright for the old man was when one of the Pakistani girls that packed garlick 3 to a pack for Safeways took a fancy to young David, and the old man got wind of this and exstingwished the flame there and then.David always reminded us of a schoolboy experimenting with different projects, most of which failed but we still are in contact with Solstor and do the odd job mostley inbound.Derdrie is still there pretty much in charge and they have trucks again now, infact i saw one today on my way back from Warminster, i suspect he was going to load at Codfod , another MH moment.

He was about 17 “The Boy” when he first sat in that office. All eyes and ears…dads spy on the ground!

Ah! Codford, the job everyone strived for, on our doorstep.

Gazz the boy might have been all ears and eyes but billy liars who the hells where board on the wall was never true, he had every thing tucked up in his head for him and only him to know.

But when he was there it was a brilliant job, he never asked who is it and where are you? he knew, and as for the ‘BOY’ as you call him i was there from 87 to 98 and never had any problem with him or his father many good memories, take care Melv.

Nah! The Boy was polite and willing to learn but it put Viner on the edge.

Viner could talk on 2 fones AND listen to a conversation in the office and give instructions. Buzzer is correct, the board was always out of date and Mark had it all in his head. Some feat.

This is one from the old stable but a very desirable motor,ex Bowyers so was a dull brown but in very good order. We soon brightened her up and i wish i had one like it today.

Textbook F88. Driven by ‘Gooj’ at the time of the pic, hence the arrangement of flags in the windscreen. The truck was featured in Patrick Dyers book on F88 / F89 at work. - Can anyone see what is signwritten bottom right of the bumper. Gooj had it done, Buzzer went mad, but it did get to stay on there!

Thanks for the update Bubbs, what im’e wondering now was Scott of Bletchley any thing to do with bowyers. When we bought GFC the only panel we had to replace was near side rear quater panel behind the wing and the two rubber steps on top of said wing but the rest was all good. I know the sign on the bumper read " she smiles at the miles " and thats without looking it up.Cheers Buzzer.

Hi " schubert58 " i take it from your AKA you used your name and pos the year you were born,i dont remember you personaly but i bet Horry does. I have not had much to do with the day to day running of the company for a few years now, have handed that on to Horry and Steve but the boss still attends 4 days a week to keep every thing in order.Time flies especially as you get older and you are right when you say about keeping going, but as for all it is a hard old world today in transport and i can think of at least twenty companys who used to operate in and around Southampton who have dissapeared in the last two decades. You talkin of only having one arm reminded me of years ago Brain Haulage had a guy with one arm on containers out of Southampton, that was not you by any chance was it ? cheers JD aka Buzzer.

sorry john it did look that way it is wifes maiden name and door no now i dont really want to put my sir name but iam sure if i tell you Roy W--------- and horry will work it out with the one arm bit to (left arm) and no that wasnt me that used to do containers
