But it’s not JUST a dog - it’s the principle of changing the name of that dog because someone now objects to the word that Gibson gave him as a name. Back in 1940s Britain, there was no racial connotation to the word, it was in common usage to describe a dark brown or black item, be it a ball of knitting wool, tin of paint, boot polish or a pet animal. The derogatory use came about in America, and found its way over here later mainly through film and music. It’s a word increasingly widely used in black street music and between members of that community, yet only when ‘outsiders’ use the term is it objected to. As I and others have stated before, rewriting or erasing history can only do harm. It has to be learned from, not ignored or twisted to suit a minority agenda.

Ironically the term would have been and still is used just the same in the Union States as the Secessionist states. Before during and long after the US War of Federal Aggression.
In all cases it is just an adjective noun/noun modifier.Nothing more nothing less.Whether Latin or US Southern States drawl or English WW2 hero.
Ironically it could be used in a non derogatory way.Such as by the Guy Gibson’s and Gene Hackman’s/Rupert Anderson’s/John Proctor’s of this world.
Just as an any KKK activist could use the words Afro American instead but still meant in a derogatory way just the same to stay under the radar of the Gene Hackman’s/Rupert Anderson’s/John Proctor’s, let alone Antifa’s, of this world.

Totally agree on the ‘coloured people/people of colour’ thing, but either one is a more accurate description than ‘black’ or ‘white’. There aren’t any ‘black’ or ‘white’ people on the planet, all of us come in shades of colour from pale pinkish-ivory through to dark brown.
When I was a Trailer Mate at T. Brady & Sons Ltd in the mid/late 60’s the nickname of the night shunter in the Barrow Steel was N----- and he was universally known by that name and not his real name of Jack ! I never heard any complaints then but I suppose that Barrow wasn’t “blessed” with many if at all any BLM or People of colour ! Cheers Bewick.
